Marine Discovery Center (NSB):
Come explore one of Florida’s most beautiful natural treasures!
The magnificent 156 mile Indian River Lagoon is home to the most biologically diverse estuary in North America. More than 4,000 species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered, can be found here, where salt and fresh water meet. Considered by many as a “cradle of the ocean”, it is the birthplace of 95% of Florida’s fish and crustaceans. Amazing!
Your adventure through this pristine landscape begins at the Marine Science Center, located at 520 Barracuda Blvd. in New Smyrna Beach. Admission is free! Check out the center’s live aquarium, which houses snails, urchins, horseshoe, crabs, turtles, and even a shark. There’s a touch tank for kids, as well as temporary exhibits for some peculiar and unusual sea critters. The Butterfly Garden is home to some rare and unique butterflies, and a special area for kids provides a place to play and picnic.
Walk, paddle, or cruise with certified naturalists and teachers by booking a spot on one of the guided Eco tours. Programs at the Marine Discovery Center are designed for all ages and offer outdoor “hands-on, feet-wet” learning opportunities via classes, camps, lectures, as well as boat and kayak tours. Highlights of the 2-hour tours are the dolphin and manatee sightings, a variety of seasonal birds, and Florida’s local flora and fauna.
If you’re looking for fun and adventure while learning about marine biology and environmental stewardship, the Marine Science Center is for you!
Hours: Open weekdays from 9AM–5PM and weekends 9AM–3PM.
