Explore Cocoa Beach

Kennedy Space Center, surfing, and the Space Coast

Things to Do in Cocoa Beach & Cape Canaveral

Cocoa Beach is the heart of Florida’s Space Coast — the stretch of Atlantic coastline where NASA has been launching rockets since the 1960s. Kennedy Space Center is 20 minutes north, Port Canaveral cruise ships are 10 minutes away, and the surf is some of the best on the East Coast.

It’s also an hour east of Orlando, making it the perfect day trip or add-on to a theme park vacation.

Kennedy Space Center near Cocoa Beach Florida

Kennedy Space Center

The single best attraction on Florida’s east coast, period.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex — Full-day attraction that includes the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit (the real shuttle, suspended at launch angle with payload bay open), the Apollo/Saturn V Center (a real Saturn V rocket — the most powerful machine ever built), and multiple IMAX films.

Bus Tour — Included with admission. Drives you through the active launch facility past the Vehicle Assembly Building (one of the largest buildings in the world), real launch pads, and the countdown clock.

Lunch With an Astronaut — An add-on experience where you eat lunch in a small group with a NASA astronaut and can ask questions. Worth the upcharge.

Rocket Launches — If you time your trip during a launch window, you can watch from the KSC causeway or from the beach. SpaceX launches from nearby Cape Canaveral Space Force Station multiple times per month. Check launch schedules before booking.

Admission is about $75 for adults. Plan a full day — you can easily spend 6-8 hours.

Surfing at Cocoa Beach Florida

Surfing

Cocoa Beach is where Florida surfing started. Kelly Slater — the greatest competitive surfer of all time — grew up here.

The breaks aren’t Hawaii, but they’re consistent and beginner-friendly. The best surf is during hurricane season (June-November) when swells push in from the Atlantic. Winter brings smaller but clean waves.

Ron Jon Surf Shop — The giant 52,000-square-foot surf shop on A1A that’s open 24/7. It’s a tourist landmark, but it’s also a legitimate surf shop with board rentals, lessons, and gear.

Surf Lessons — Multiple schools operate on the beach. 90-minute beginner lessons run $50-75 and most people can stand up on their first session.

Port Canaveral near Cocoa Beach Florida

Port Canaveral

One of the busiest cruise ports in the world. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Norwegian, and MSC all sail from here.

Even if you’re not cruising, the port area has Exploration Tower (a 7-story observation building with exhibits about the port’s history), Grills Seafood Deck for waterfront dining, and the Cove area with restaurants and shops.

Fishing — Port Canaveral has a large sport fishing fleet. Half-day and full-day charters run offshore for mahi-mahi, wahoo, kingfish, and sailfish.

The Beach & Outdoors

Cocoa Beach Pier — 800 feet over the Atlantic with restaurants, bars, and shops. Rikki Tiki Tavern at the end of the pier is the sunset drink spot.

Lori Wilson Park — Beachside park with boardwalks through coastal hammock, picnic areas, and easy beach access. Sea turtles nest here in summer.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge — Shares a boundary with KSC. Manatees, alligators, bald eagles, roseate spoonbills, and sea turtles. The Black Point Wildlife Drive is a 7-mile auto loop through marshland. Free.

Kayaking the Indian River Lagoon — Bioluminescent kayak tours in summer (June-October) are the signature Cocoa Beach experience. Paddle through the lagoon at night and the water glows electric blue with every stroke. Multiple tour operators run nightly trips.

Where to Eat

Fat Snook — One of the best restaurants on the Space Coast. Seasonal menu, fresh catch, excellent wine list. Small space — reservations recommended.

Jazzy’s Mainely Lobster — Casual lobster rolls, clam chowder, and fried seafood.

Florida’s Seafood Bar & Grill — Right near the port. Fresh local catch, cold beer, waterfront seating.

Grills Riverside — Waterfront tiki bar and restaurant on the Indian River. Fresh fish, live music, sunset views.
