The breathtaking waterfalls of Dunn’s River are nowadays a true symbol of Jamaica: a must-see for every tourist or visitor, whether coming here via cruise ship or staying in one of the numerous hotels and all-inclusive resorts of the North Coast.
Arriving at Dunn’s River Falls is quite simple, as the entrance is on the coastal road between St Ann’s Bay and Ocho Rios, which the locals calls “Ochie”. It is only a few minutes form the Ochie resorts, about 1.5 hours from Montego Bay or Kingston, and 3 hours from Negril.
Quite a number of operators and destination management companies offer this excursion as it is quite frankly the top choice for Jamaica lovers, but some might even go there on their own to explore autonomously and skip the guided part: we definitely recommend to follow a guide for the climb, though, and you will soon see why.
Our top choice is to arrive via catamaran.
The falls have a private dock at the bottom where several vessels arrive and leave every day with hundreds of tourists (such as Island Routes, Chukka or Cool Runnings). The view from the sea is majestic and you can top it off with some excellent snorkeling in the area and a good Jamaican party while returning to your resort!
Once you arrive on the dock, you will be given a bracelet and start your tour with your guide by the small white-sand beach on the left side. Here, guides will give you a few information and safety suggestions, ask you all to hold each other’s hands while climbing to help each other, and start the climb of this impressive 600 feet cascading waterfalls.
While you ascend, you will have a few steep steps, some slippery rocks to put your feet on, and a few pools where to dive or get a nice natural water massage. It is a truly enchanting experience, surrounded by an incredibly lush vegetation and far from the noises of town.

General recommendations:
Ensure you have water shoes or dive boots to climb the waterfalls. Some use old sneakers, too: anything that has a grip will do! Avoid flip flops and leave the barefoot climb to the guides alone, we still don’t know how they do it!
Dress code? A bathing suit or beach wear is fine, ensure you have freedom of movement. Due to the wet environment, it is not impossible to slip and fall, so leave all jewelry, cash, cards and keys on the boat or on the bus or in the lockers provided at the Falls.
You can of course bring a camera or a Go-Pro, as long as they are waterproof, or purchase the pictures and videos that local operators provide at the end of the tour. For those who don’t feel comfortable climbing or have physical restrictions, a stairway follows the falls along their path, allowing for a still beautiful, yet dry, experience.
