How To Make Hydrogen Water At Home Almost Free

The process of creating hydrogen water at home involves a simple chemical reaction between pure solid magnesium and malic acid. This reaction results in the release of hydrogen gas, which dissolves into the water, creating hydrogen-rich water.  I like to keep the chemical reaction separate from the water I am drinking.  Below is the process I am using.

Materials Needed

3. Water: Opt for purified or distilled water to ensure the absence of impurities that could interfere with the reaction.

The Procedure

1. Begin by filling a smaller glass container like a test tube that has a cork.  The cork needs to have a hole drilled into it so that just hydrogen can escape.  The idea here is to keep the water with the malic acid and magnesium separate from the water you will drink.  Make the hole small enough to just let the hydrogen pass.  
2. Add a piece of magnesium into the smaller glass container and then add a small amount (1/2 teaspoon max) of powdered malic acid.  Fill the container with water about 3/4 of the way to the top.  Put the lid with the hole on the container and gently mix the water and malic acid.  Place that smaller container into the larger container.  I prefer a glass and cork test tube inside a glass mason jar.
3. Carefully place the smaller jar into the bigger one and fill it to the tippy top with water.  Put the lid on and double up the lid insert as the pressure may bend the insert.
4. Allow the mixture to sit for 30 minutes to several hours.  Just make sure you use the correct type of container.
5. Once the reaction is complete, your hydrogen-rich water is ready for consumption.  I pull the smaller tube out and flavor the water.  Malic acid has a very sour taste.
