Toxic Mold Found At Golds Gym Daytona Beach Fl

Chaetomium spp, Aspergillus spp, & Nigrospora spp

Mold Found Inside Gold’s Gym Sauna In Daytona Beach

GOLDS GYM MOLD ARMOR TEST SENT FOR ANALYSISIn early August of 2024, a Mold Armor test kit revealed the presence of three dangerous molds and mycotoxins—Chaetomium spp., Aspergillus spp., and Nigrospora spp.—

Inside the men’s sauna at Gold’s Gym, located at 1808 W International Speedway Blvd Ste. 601, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.

This discovery has raised serious concerns about the health and safety standards at this gym facility. Despite numerous formal complaints filed with Daytona Beach’s health department, code enforcement, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), Attorney General Ashley Moody, Governor Ron DeSantis, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Gold’s Gym has failed to address the situation or respond to any of these agencies.

What makes this case particularly alarming is that the sauna, constructed in 2012, appears to lack a proper floor drain, with a bench nailed directly to the wall, suggesting that it may never have been properly cleaned or maintained. Also note that the humidity level inside the dry sauna was 99%.

How Dangerous Is The Gold's Gym Mold Issue?

Why Mold Exposure Is So Dangerous

Mold exposure is a significant health hazard, especially when toxic molds like Chaetomium spp., Aspergillus spp., and Nigrospora spp. are involved. These molds release spores and mycotoxins that can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin, causing a wide range of health issues, from mild allergic reactions to severe respiratory illnesses.

Immediate Health Risks

  • Respiratory Issues: Mold spores can cause coughing, throat irritation, and shortness of breath, especially in people with asthma or allergies. Chronic exposure can lead to severe lung infections, particularly with molds like Aspergillus, which can cause a potentially fatal condition known as aspergillosis.
  • Mycotoxins and Systemic Effects: Chaetomium and Aspergillus are known to produce mycotoxins—poisonous compounds that can damage the nervous system, immune system, and even lead to organ failure if exposure is prolonged.
  • Skin and Eye Irritation: Direct contact with mold can cause rashes, redness, and irritation of the eyes.

Impact On Vulnerable Populations

The risk of severe health outcomes is even higher for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems. Daytona Beach is home to a large retirement community, and many elderly individuals frequent Gold’s Gym for exercise and wellness. For these individuals, mold exposure can be especially dangerous, and in extreme cases, potentially fatal. Complications such as severe lung infections, immune system suppression, and systemic fungal infections can lead to hospitalizations or even death if untreated.

What Exactly Do These Toxic Molds Do To People?

1. Chaetomium spp.

  • Description: Chaetomium is a type of mold commonly found in water-damaged buildings. It thrives in areas with high moisture, such as saunas, bathrooms, and basements. Chaetomium has a cottony texture and typically starts off white, later turning to a dark gray or black color as it matures.
  • Health Risks:
  • Mycotoxins: Chaetomium produces potent mycotoxins, which are toxic substances that can cause significant health problems. Exposure to Chaetomium mycotoxins can affect the brain, immune system, and respiratory tract.
  • Respiratory Infections: Inhalation of Chaetomium spores can lead to infections in the lungs, causing severe respiratory problems, especially in individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Neurological Damage: Some mycotoxins produced by Chaetomium can lead to neurological symptoms, including confusion, memory loss, and brain fog. In extreme cases, exposure may be linked to autoimmune diseases and neurotoxic effects.
  • Fatal Risk: For people with compromised immune systems, the toxins from Chaetomium can be life-threatening, as they may lead to invasive fungal infections that are difficult to treat.

2. Aspergillus spp.

  • Description: Aspergillus is one of the most common molds found both indoors and outdoors. It thrives in damp, warm environments, making saunas a perfect habitat. There are many species of Aspergillus, but several are particularly dangerous to human health, including Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger.
  • Health Risks:
  • Aspergillosis: One of the most serious conditions caused by Aspergillus is aspergillosis, a group of diseases that affect the lungs. Individuals with weakened immune systems are especially at risk of developing this condition, which can be fatal if not treated. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, chest pain, and fever.
  • Allergic Reactions: Aspergillus can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, leading to respiratory issues such as shortness of breath, nasal congestion, and severe asthma attacks.
  • Invasive Fungal Infections: In immunocompromised individuals, such as the elderly or people undergoing chemotherapy, Aspergillus can cause invasive infections that spread to the lungs, sinuses, and even the brain. These infections can be fatal if not treated promptly.
  • Mycotoxins: Certain species of Aspergillus produce aflatoxins, a type of mycotoxin that is known to cause liver damage and even cancer after long-term exposure.

3. Nigrospora spp.

  • Description: Nigrospora is less commonly discussed than Chaetomium or Aspergillus, but it can still pose a significant health risk. This mold is typically found on decaying plant material, but it can also grow indoors in areas with high moisture levels, such as saunas, air conditioning systems, and bathrooms.
  • Health Risks:
  • Respiratory Issues: Inhalation of Nigrospora spores can lead to respiratory irritation, including symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and throat irritation. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions are more susceptible to these effects.
  • Allergic Reactions: Exposure to Nigrospora can trigger allergic reactions, leading to symptoms like watery eyes, runny nose, and difficulty breathing.
  • Infections In Immunocompromised Individuals: While Nigrospora is not as commonly linked to severe infections as Aspergillus, individuals with weakened immune systems are still at risk for developing infections, particularly in the lungs.

How Mold Spreads in the Gym Environment

Mold thrives in warm, moist environments like saunas, but once it begins growing, the spores can easily become airborne and spread through the gym’s air conditioning and heating vents. This means that mold spores aren’t confined to the sauna but can travel to other parts of the gym, contaminating areas like the locker rooms, showers, and workout spaces.

When mold spreads through the HVAC system, it can rapidly contaminate the entire facility, putting every member, staff, and visitor at risk. Given the amount of foot traffic in a gym, it’s likely that a significant percentage of the gym’s visitors—possibly 30-50%—have been exposed to mold spores without realizing it.

Long-Term Consequences If Not Remediated

If the mold issue at Gold’s Gym is not addressed immediately, the health and safety of its members will continue to be at risk. Mold infestations only get worse with time, and the longer the sauna remains uncleaned and unrepaired, the more extensive the contamination will become. The health implications are severe:

  • Chronic Respiratory Illness: Continued exposure to mold can lead to long-term respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and even permanent lung damage.
  • Immune System Damage: Mold toxins can weaken the immune system, making people more susceptible to infections and illnesses. For individuals with already weakened immune systems, like the elderly, this can lead to more serious health complications, including systemic infections that can be fatal.
  • Legal & Financial Consequences: Gold’s Gym could face legal action from members who develop health problems as a result of mold exposure. The gym could also be subject to fines or closures if regulatory authorities take action.

The Scope Of This Health Threat:

Considering the extensive air circulation within the gym, mold spores could be spread across a wide area, potentially exposing not just sauna users, but everyone using the facility. Given that this gym serves both locals and travelers, a large percentage of its members and visitors could be unknowingly affected by this toxic exposure. Tourists and business travelers may experience symptoms after they have left the Daytona Beach area, potentially misattributing the cause of their health problems, thus allowing the mold issue to go unnoticed for longer.

In a high-traffic environment like a gym, it’s estimated that thousands of individuals may have already been exposed to harmful mold spores. This includes not only long-term members but also occasional visitors who may have come into contact with contaminated surfaces or inhaled airborne spores.

Immediate Need For Action

Gold’s Gym must address this issue urgently. Professional mold remediation is the only effective solution to remove the dangerous molds found in the sauna and to prevent their spread to other parts of the facility. The sauna must be closed until a thorough investigation, cleaning, and renovation can be completed. Additionally, proper maintenance protocols need to be established, including routine cleaning and the installation of a floor drain to prevent moisture buildup.

Gym members and visitors should be notified of the potential risks, and anyone who has experienced symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, headaches, or fatigue after using the facility should consult a healthcare provider. This is especially critical for elderly individuals, those with asthma, or people with weakened immune systems, as they are at higher risk of serious complications.

Evidence Of Contamination  –  PDF Results By Mold Armor

Above are videos and photos documenting the extent of the mold contamination inside the sauna, this evidence that has been submitted to Gold’s Gym and various Florida government agencies. Despite this clear evidence, no actions have been taken by the gym to remediate the situation. For the safety of all members, it is vital that Gold’s Gym prioritizes immediate action to resolve this dangerous issue before more individuals are harmed.

In conclusion, the presence of dangerous molds inside the sauna at Gold’s Gym in Daytona Beach poses a serious threat to the health and well-being of its members and visitors. With the potential for widespread exposure, including among the elderly population, the failure to remediate this issue could have fatal consequences for some. Gold’s Gym must take responsibility and act swiftly to protect its patrons from further harm.
