Free Things to Do in Waikiki & Honolulu
Oahu has an enormous amount of free entertainment — from world-famous beaches to hiking trails to cultural experiences that cost nothing.
Beaches (All Free)
All Hawaii beaches are public by law. No beach charges admission.
Waikiki Beach — The most famous beach in the Pacific. Walk along the shore, swim in the gentle surf, and watch the sunset behind Diamond Head. Free.
Ala Moana Beach Park — Local favorite. Calmer than Waikiki, a protected lagoon, and a large park for picnics. Free.
Kailua Beach (windward side) — Regularly ranked among the best in the US. Powdery white sand, turquoise water, and mountain backdrop. Free. 30 minutes from Waikiki.
Hiking (Free)
Diamond Head (Lē’ahi) — The 1.6-mile round trip hike to the summit of Waikiki’s iconic crater. 360-degree views of the coastline and city. $5 per person entry (not technically free, but the cheapest activity on the island for the payoff).
Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail — 2-mile paved trail on the eastern tip of Oahu with stunning ocean views. Whale watching from the trail in winter. Free.
Manoa Falls — 1.6-mile round trip through a rainforest to a 150-foot waterfall. $5 parking. Free to hike.
Free Culture
Iolani Palace grounds — The only royal palace in the United States. The grounds are free to walk (interior tours require tickets). The Coronation Bandstand hosts free concerts.
Bishop Museum (free first Sunday) — Hawaii’s largest museum of natural and cultural history. Free on the first Sunday of each month (for Hawaii residents — check visitor policies).
Chinatown (Honolulu) — Walk through one of the oldest Chinatowns in the US. Lei stands, herb shops, art galleries, and food stalls.
Duke Kahanamoku Statue (Waikiki) — The bronze statue of the father of modern surfing, on the beach at Waikiki. Free photo op and a piece of Hawaiian surfing history.
