Diamond Head Hike — Trail Guide, Tips & What to Expect
Diamond Head is the iconic volcanic crater overlooking Waikiki Beach — and the trail to the summit is one of the most popular hikes in Hawaii.
The Trail
The hike is 1.6 miles round trip with 560 feet of elevation gain — moderate difficulty, mostly paved switchbacks with some stairs. The final push to the summit goes through a dark tunnel and up steep stairs (225 steps total). The summit has 360-degree views of Waikiki, downtown Honolulu, the coastline, and the crater interior. On clear days you can see other islands.
Logistics
Reservations required — Diamond Head State Monument requires advance reservations ($5 per person, $10 per vehicle). Book online at gostateparks.hawaii.gov. First entry at 6 AM, last entry at 4 PM. The hike takes 1-2 hours round trip. Go at sunrise for the best light, coolest temperatures, and thinner crowds.
What to Bring
Water (there are no water fountains on the trail), sunscreen, a hat, and a flashlight or phone light for the dark tunnel near the summit. Wear closed-toe shoes — the trail has uneven surfaces and the stairs can be slippery. The wind at the summit can be strong — hold onto hats and phones.
After the Hike
The Diamond Head Market & Grill at the base has excellent plate lunch and smoothies. The Monsarrat Avenue food corridor nearby has some of the best breakfast and coffee in Honolulu — Bogart’s Cafe and Pioneer Saloon are standouts.
