Best Breakfast & Brunch in Waikiki — Oceanfront, Local & Japanese

Best Breakfast & Brunch in Waikiki

Waikiki wakes up to an unusual breakfast landscape — Hawaiian plate lunches next to Japanese cafés next to beachfront pancake houses. The Japanese influence on Honolulu’s breakfast scene is particularly strong, with fluffy Japanese-style soufflé pancakes and elaborate set breakfasts.

Local & Hawaiian

Rainbow Drive-In (Kapahulu) — The local classic since 1961. Loco moco (hamburger patty, rice, gravy, fried egg), Portuguese sausage and eggs, and spam and eggs. Counter service, massive portions, low prices. This is how Honolulu eats breakfast.

Liliha Bakery (Nimitz Hwy / multiple locations) — Famous for coco puffs (cream-filled pastries with a chocolate glaze) and the loco moco. The diner counter at the original location is pure old-school Honolulu.

Japanese-Style Breakfast

Heavenly Island Lifestyle (Waikiki) — Fluffy Japanese-style soufflé pancakes that jiggle on the plate. Acai bowls, Kona coffee, and a bright tropical setting.

Marukame Udon (Waikiki) — Opens at 11 AM for lunch, but the handmade udon is so good it counts as brunch. The line moves fast and the noodles are made in front of you.

Beachfront & Hotel

Hau Tree Lanai (New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel) — Open-air breakfast under a canopy of hau trees overlooking Sans Souci Beach. Robert Louis Stevenson reportedly sat under these same trees. The eggs Benedict and fresh papaya are simple perfection.

Duke’s Waikiki (Outrigger) — Named after Duke Kahanamoku. Beachfront breakfast buffet with pancakes, fresh fruit, and a carving station. The views of Waikiki Beach from the lanai are the real draw.

Coffee

Island Vintage Coffee (Royal Hawaiian Center) — Kona coffee, acai bowls, and a people-watching patio in the heart of Waikiki.

The Curb (Kaimuki) — Honolulu’s specialty coffee roaster. Single-origin pour-overs and excellent espresso in a neighborhood setting away from Waikiki.
