Free Things to Do in Scottsdale

Scottsdale’s desert landscape provides some of the best free outdoor experiences in the Southwest — and the art and culture scene has plenty of no-cost options too.

Desert Hiking (Free)

McDowell Sonoran Preserve — 30,500 acres of protected Sonoran Desert with 225+ miles of trails. Gateway trailhead is the main access point. Saguaro cacti, desert wildflowers (spring), and panoramic mountain views. Free. Bring water — lots of it.

Pinnacle Peak Trail — 3.5-mile round trip with sweeping city and mountain views. One of the most popular desert hikes in the Valley. Free parking. Go early to beat the heat.

Camelback Mountain — The iconic Phoenix-area hike. Echo Canyon trail is steep and requires scrambling. Cholla trail is slightly longer but more gradual. Both reward with 360-degree Valley views from the 2,704-foot summit. Free. Very crowded on weekends.

Art & Culture (Free)

Scottsdale Arts District & Thursday ArtWalk — Every Thursday evening (October-June), Old Town galleries open their doors with free wine and meet-the-artist events. Walk from gallery to gallery along Main Street and Marshall Way.

Scottsdale Civic Center Park — Public art installations and sculpture garden. Free to walk through any time.

Scottsdale Waterfront — Walking path along the Arizona Canal with public art, restaurants, and bridge crossings.

Free Experiences

Old Town Scottsdale — Window shopping, galleries, and people-watching in the downtown district. The Western-themed buildings and the bronze cowboy statues are quirky and photogenic.

Talking Stick Fields — Free entry to the recreational area along the Salt River with views of the McDowell Mountains.

Desert sunsets — The Arizona sunset, with saguaro silhouettes against orange and purple sky, is one of the most photogenic natural spectacles in the country. Free from any elevated viewpoint.
