Visiting the Mayan Ruins of San Gervasio in Cozumel

What to see at San Gervasio in Cozumel

Across the water from Playa del Carmen, the San Gervasio archeological zone is one of the most important cultural areas on the Island of Cozumel. The zone consists of six main areas with additional temples in the area. The site was the location of pilgrimages made by the Maya people who worshiped Ixchel, the Goddess of Fertility and Medicine.

San Gervasio dates back to between 300 BC to 250 AD with the most recent structures dating back to 900 and 1200 AD. The first explorations to the site were made in the mid-1840s. Each ruin at San Gervasio was used for religious activities and daily life. They are all connected by a unique network of white stone roads called sacbeob. Take note of the immaculate condition of red handprints on the interior walls of the first structures you see when you enter the complex, known as Las Manitas. In all, there are approximately 19 structures to see spread out across the site.

Though prices are subject to change, the current entrance fee is 180 pesos (approximately $10 USD) to enter the grounds which are open from 8:00 am to 3:45 pm daily. English speaking guides are available for an added fee and the site has access to restrooms, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

Did you know that the world’s second largest reef is right there? It’s called the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, but more about that in another post. This post is all about the Mayan Ruins of Cozumel and you can read over 600 traveler reviews here on TripAdvisor. OOOOH!  I almost forgot The ruins are home to hundreds of Iguanas that are pet friendly. Bring some snacks for them.

Getting to San Gervasio Ruins

You will need to access the Island of Cozumel by ferry before you make your way to the San Gervasio Ruins. Ferries run by Ultramar cost 200 pesos for adults and 130 pesos for children.
