Things to Do in San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is one of the most visited cities in Texas — and the River Walk is why. A network of stone pathways along the San Antonio River, one level below the streets, lined with restaurants, bars, and hotels. It’s the heart of the city and one of the most unique urban spaces in America.

The main loop — About 2.5 miles of walkways, bridges, and river-level dining. Boat tours run the length of the loop narrating the history and architecture. Most restaurants have river-level patios.

Museum Reach — The newer extension north through the Museum District. Connects to the Pearl District (see below). Less crowded, more public art.

Mission Reach — An 8-mile extension south connecting to the historic missions. Great for biking or running.

The Alamo

The most famous landmark in Texas. The 1836 battle where 189 defenders held the mission against thousands of Mexican soldiers for 13 days. The site is smaller than most visitors expect — it sits in the middle of downtown, surrounded by modern buildings.

Free admission to the chapel and grounds. The new Alamo Exhibition Hall has artifacts and multimedia presentations covering the full history.

San Antonio Missions

A UNESCO World Heritage Site — four Spanish colonial missions south of downtown connected by the Mission Reach trail. Mission San José (the “Queen of the Missions”) is the most impressive. All four are active Catholic parishes. Free.

More

SeaWorld San Antonio — Theme park with coasters and marine animal exhibits. The Tidal Surge and Steel Eel coasters are the highlights.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas — Theme park in a repurposed quarry. The Iron Rattler hybrid coaster is world-class.

Natural Bridge Caverns — 30 minutes north. The largest commercial cave in Texas. The formations are genuinely impressive.

Tex-Mex — Mi Tierra (24/7, in Market Square, a San Antonio institution since 1941), Rosario’s (Southtown), and any of the puffy taco spots.
