Free Things to Do in San Antonio
San Antonio is one of the best-value major cities in America for visitors — the two most famous attractions (the Alamo and the River Walk) are both free, and there’s a surprising amount of no-cost culture and nature to explore.
The Big Two (Free)
The Alamo — The most visited attraction in Texas. The 1836 battle site where 200 Texan defenders held the former mission against thousands of Mexican soldiers. The church and grounds are free to visit. Guided tours are available for a fee but the self-guided experience is excellent.
San Antonio River Walk — 15 miles of pedestrian pathways along the San Antonio River, one level below street level. Lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and public art. Walking the River Walk costs nothing — it’s the dining and shopping that gets expensive. The stretch from the Pearl District south through downtown is the most scenic.
Free Museums & Culture
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park — Four Spanish colonial missions (Concepción, San José, San Juan, Espada) forming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All free to visit. Mission San José is the largest and most impressive. The mission trail is bikeable.
McNay Art Museum (free first Sunday) — Spanish Colonial Revival mansion with a collection of modern and contemporary art. Free on the first Sunday of each month (and free Thursdays 4-9 PM).
The Briscoe Western Art Museum (free first Sunday) — Western art, artifacts, and a Pancho Villa saddle. Free first Sunday of each month.
Parks & Outdoors
Brackenridge Park — 343-acre urban park with trails, the Japanese Tea Garden (free), and proximity to the San Antonio Zoo and the Witte Museum.
Japanese Tea Garden — A stunning garden built in an old quarry. Koi ponds, stone bridges, a 60-foot waterfall, and lush vegetation. Free admission. One of the most beautiful free attractions in Texas.
Pearl Farmers Market (Saturday mornings) — Free entry to the weekly farmers market at the Pearl District. Local produce, prepared foods, coffee, and live music.
