Best Restaurants in San Antonio
San Antonio is a Tex-Mex city at its core — the puffy taco was invented here, the breakfast taco culture rivals Austin’s, and the Mexican food traditions run deeper than almost any city north of the border. But the Pearl District has turned San Antonio into a serious contemporary food destination too.
Tex-Mex & Mexican
Mi Tierra Café & Bakery (Market Square) — Open 24 hours, 365 days a year since 1941. Festive decorations year-round, mariachi bands, and a bakery case that stretches forever. The enchiladas and breakfast plates are classics. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit.
Ray’s Drive Inn — The original puffy taco. A San Antonio invention — a corn tortilla that’s deep-fried so it puffs into a crispy shell, then filled with seasoned beef, lettuce, cheese, and tomato. Cash only. Humble setting, legendary food.
La Gloria (Pearl District) — Mexican street food from different regions — tacos, tortas, ceviches, and cocktails. The al pastor tacos and the esquites are excellent.
Garcia’s Mexican Food (multiple locations) — The local chain for everyday Tex-Mex. Cheese enchiladas with chili gravy (the San Antonio standard), puffy tacos, and caldo de pollo.
The Pearl District
Cured — Charcuterie-focused restaurant in the Pearl. House-cured meats, creative small plates, and an impressive cocktail program.
Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery — Craft brewery and restaurant inside the old Pearl Brewery complex. Southern-meets-Texas cuisine with house-brewed beer.
Bakery Lorraine — French pastry shop with macarons, croissants, and pastries that rival anything in Paris. The salted caramel macaron is the signature.
Barbecue
2M Smokehouse — South Texas-style BBQ with Mexican influences. The barbacoa, brisket, and jalapeño/cheese sausage are outstanding.
The Granary ‘Cue & Brew — Upscale BBQ in the Pearl. Smoked meats plus craft beer brewed on-site.
