Portland Nightlife — Best Bars, Breweries & Things To Do After Dark

Portland is the craft beer capital of America. It’s also home to quirky dive bars, serious cocktail lounges, and an arcade bar culture that exists nowhere else. The nightlife scene is eclectic and low-key — no dress codes, no attitude, just good beer and good people. Neighborhoods like Hawthorne, Belmont, and Alberta are where the real scene happens.

Best Breweries & Beer Bars

Prost! (Northeast) — Bavarian-style beer hall. Massive communal tables, German beer, and pretzels. Feels like you’re in Munich. No pretense. The crowd is mixed ages and backgrounds. Budget $6-8 per beer.

Horse Brass Pub (Southeast) — British pub with 50+ taps. Real ales, cask-conditioned beers, and a no-frills atmosphere. Pool table, jukebox, and locals who know their beer. Cash preferred.

McMenamins — Local Oregon chain with multiple locations. Each one is different — some are pubs, some are concert venues, some are movie theaters with beer. The original location in the Kennedy School building (converted school) is worth visiting. No cover charges at bars.

Bridgeport Brewing (Northwest) — Brewpub with IPA that’s legendary in Portland. Casual brewery taps. Food is second to their beer. Crowd is relaxed and unpretentious.

Hair of the Dog Brewing (Southeast) — Small, intense brewery for beer geeks. Limited seating. If you appreciate rare beers and conversation with serious brewers, come here. Casual vibe despite high-end beer.

Best Bars by Type

Cocktail & Craft Bars

Multnomah Whiskey Library (Downtown) — Whiskey bar styled like a library. 1,500+ whiskeys. Knowledgeable bartenders. No TVs, no loud music. This is a serious drinking establishment. Budget $12-18 per cocktail.

Teardrop Cocktail Lounge (Southeast) — Craft cocktails in a small, intimate bar. No TV, no noise — just drinks and conversation. Limited seating; expect a wait on weekends. Budget $12-16 per drink.

Hey Love (Southeast) — Small craft cocktail bar in a residential neighborhood. Excellent bartenders, minimalist aesthetic, and a local favorite. Budget $12-15 per drink.

Dive Bars & Neighborhood Spots

Rum Club (Southeast Belmont) — Dive bar with rum-focused cocktails (but they make anything). Pool table, strong pours, and a genuine neighborhood vibe. Cash bar, cheap drinks.

The Matador (Northeast) — Karaoke dive bar. Cheap beer, strong drinks, and an enthusiastic karaoke crowd. This is quintessential weird Portland. No cover for karaoke.

Dan and Louis Oyster Bar (Downtown) — Historic oyster bar and dive. Beer, oysters, and locals who’ve been coming here for decades. Cash preferred, no attitude.

Arcade & Entertainment Bars

Ground Kontrol (Downtown) — Arcade bar with 70+ classic arcade games. Beer, pizza, and 8-bit nostalgia. The crowd is young and nerdy. No cover charge. Budget $4-6 per beer.

Silverado (Southeast) — Video game bar with newer and classic games. Beer selection, food, and a chill vibe. Less crowded than Ground Kontrol. No cover.

Best for Groups

Hawthorne & Belmont Bar Crawl — These adjacent neighborhoods have 20+ bars within walking distance. Each is distinct. Start at a brewery, move to a dive, end at a craft cocktail bar. Groups of 4-10 find something for everyone.

Prost! + McMenamins Crawl — Start at Prost! (communal tables make meeting new people easy), move to a McMenamins location (each is unique), end at a neighborhood dive. Three completely different vibes in one night.

Arcade & Beer Night — Ground Kontrol first (games, beer, pizza), then move to Hair of the Dog (serious beer appreciation) or a neighborhood dive (cheap drinks and locals).

What to Know

No Dress Code — Portland doesn’t care what you wear. T-shirt and jeans everywhere. Only upscale restaurants have any dress code.

Bike Culture — Portland is bike-crazy. Many people bike to bars. Bike theft is real; lock your bike securely or use Uber/Lyft.

Cash Bars — Many dive bars and small breweries are cash-only or cash-preferred. ATMs are common, but bring cash to be safe.

Last Call — Most bars close at 2 AM weekdays, 3 AM weekends. Some stay open later.

Cheap Drinks — Portland has great drink prices. Beer runs $4-7, cocktails $8-15, depending on the bar. Much cheaper than Seattle or San Francisco.

Neighborhoods — Hawthorne, Belmont, Alberta, and Alberta Arts District are the local scenes. Downtown has tourist bars and upscale spots. Southeast has the best dive bars.

Public Transportation — TriMet buses and MAX light rail are free downtown (0-15 minutes). Late night MAX and buses are limited but exist.

Weather — Portland is rainy. Most bars are indoors with good atmosphere. Summer is best for patios.

Keep Portland Weird — This is the unofficial motto. Expect eclectic crowds, no pretension, and bars that look like someone’s garage (and that’s intentional).
