Things to Do in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen — locals just call it ‘Playa’ — is the pedestrian heart of the Riviera Maya, about 40 miles south of Cancún. The town is built around 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida), a 1.5-mile walking boulevard one block in from the beach. The ferry to Cozumel runs every hour from the central pier. Compared to Cancún’s Hotel Zone, Playa is denser, more walkable, with a real downtown culture mixed in with the resort presence. Playacar (the gated section just south) and Caracol (just north) are part of the same town.

Quick Facts: Playa del Carmen is in Mexico. Best time to visit: November–April is dry season. Sargassum seaweed is heaviest April-August. Cozumel ferry runs year-round.

Top 11 Things to Do in Playa del Carmen

5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida)

Pedestrian-only shopping/dining boulevard from Calle 1 to Calle 38. Two-tiered: tourist-oriented south, more local-feel north of Calle 30.

Mamita’s & Coco Beach

Two of the best free public beach access points. Mamita’s at Calle 28 has the beach-club scene; Coco Beach further north is calmer and quieter.

Cozumel Day Trip

45-minute ferry to the island. Snorkel Palancar Reef, dive Santa Rosa Wall, or just ride scooters around the coast. Last ferry back is around 10 PM.

Xcaret Park

Full-day eco-park 15 minutes south. Underground rivers, snorkel coves, a jaguar habitat, and the evening cultural show.

Cenote Chaak Tun

A guided cavern cenote experience just outside Playa — limited groups, headlamps, swim through stalactite chambers.

Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Frida)

Small museum on 5th Avenue with reproduction works, period clothing, and biographical exhibits. Quick cultural break.

3D Museum of Wonders

5th Avenue interactive art space with optical-illusion installations. Family-friendly hour or two.

Sunset Boat Cruise

Sails leave from the marina at Calle 12 just before sunset; quieter alternative to the catamaran party tours that leave Cancún.

Akumal Turtle Snorkel

30 minutes south — Akumal Bay has resident green sea turtles year-round. Guided tours only.

Punta Esmeralda Cenote

Free public cenote on the north end of Playa where freshwater meets the ocean. Locals’ picnic spot — bring snacks.

Xenses Park

Sister park to Xcaret — sensory illusions, mud baths, a tilted-house experience. Half-day, more curiosity than adrenaline.
