Orlando with Kids — Beyond the Theme Parks
Everyone knows about Disney, Universal, and SeaWorld. But Orlando has a wealth of family-friendly activities that don’t require $150+ per person park tickets — and many of them are the experiences your kids will remember most.
Interactive Museums & Science
Orlando Science Center — Four floors of interactive exhibits, a planetarium, a crocodile exhibit, and a Kids Town area for the youngest visitors. The giant-screen theater shows nature films. Good for a half-day, especially on a rainy afternoon.
Crayola Experience (Florida Mall) — 70,000 square feet of coloring, crafting, and creating. Kids name and wrap their own crayons, melt crayons into art, and star in their own coloring page. Best for ages 3-10.
Madame Tussauds (ICON Park) — Wax figures of superheroes, celebrities, and sports stars. Kids can pose with and touch everything. Also at ICON Park: SEA LIFE Aquarium and the Orlando Eye observation wheel.
Nature & Animals
Gatorland — The “Alligator Capital of the World.” Thousands of alligators and crocodiles, zip lines over the gator ponds, a splash park, and a breeding marsh with a boardwalk. More fun and less corporate than the big parks. Affordable admission.
Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens (Sanford) — Smaller than big-city zoos but well done. Splash playground, zip line, and a wading area where kids can feed giraffes. 30 minutes from downtown Orlando.
Green Meadows Petting Farm (Kissimmee) — Real working farm with pony rides, cow milking, pig racing, and hands-on animal encounters. Best for ages 2-8.
Water Fun
Aquatica (SeaWorld’s water park) — Slides, wave pool, lazy river, and a raft ride through an underwater dolphin habitat. Generally less crowded than the main parks.
LEGOLAND Water Park (Winter Haven, 45 min) — Best for the LEGO-age crowd (2-12). Build-your-own raft stations, wave pool, and slides themed around LEGO.
Kelly Park / Rock Springs (45 min north) — A natural lazy river — tube down a spring-fed creek through a tropical forest canopy. The water is 72°F year-round and crystal clear. Kids love it. Free tubes available or bring your own.
Budget Fun
ICON Park — The Orlando Eye, SEA LIFE, and Madame Tussauds can be bundled for discounts. The area itself is free to walk around — restaurants, a playground, and street performers.
Old Town (Kissimmee) — Walking mall with shops, rides, a weekly car cruise (Saturday nights), and an old-fashioned boardwalk atmosphere.
Fun Spot America (multiple locations) — Small amusement parks with go-karts, roller coasters, and rides. Much cheaper than the big theme parks. Pay-per-ride or unlimited wristband options.
