Fifty acres of quiet, minutes from downtown
Leu Gardens is Orlando's botanical garden: nearly 50 acres and more than 40 plant collections, close enough to downtown that the theme-park crowds never find it. The grounds roll from bamboo groves that "feel like another world" to Mrs. Leu's favorite rose garden, with turtles and lizards crossing the paths.
The couple who planted it
Harry P. Leu and his wife Mary Jane bought the property in 1936 and filled it with plants collected on expeditions around the world — including more than 240 camellia varieties — then gifted it all to the City of Orlando. Credit where the tours give it: Mary Jane was the shaping force behind the gardens. Harry's historic home still stands on the grounds.
The practical layer
- Open 9 to 5 daily except Christmas
- Admission was $10 adults / $5 kids when the most practical tour here was filmed
- Free for everyone on the first Monday of the month
- Arrive at opening — the compact guide on this page is blunt about beating both the heat and the crowds, and budget a couple of hours
What rotates through
Seasonal exhibits land in the gardens — the visits on this page caught an origami-in-the-garden sculpture show (bronze origami raven and all) and a nighttime lights event the family had done before returning by day. There's an on-site coffee shop and ice cream for the midpoint break.
