Free Things to Do in Orlando
Orlando is a theme-park town with theme-park prices. But the real Orlando — the one locals live in — has an enormous amount of free experiences that most visitors never discover. Natural springs, urban parks, food events, and some of the best wildlife viewing in Florida.
Parks & Nature
Tibet-Butler Nature Preserve — 440 acres of pine flatwoods and cypress wetlands on the west side of Orlando. Multiple hiking trails, boardwalks over wetlands, and a nature center. Free admission. One of the quietest green spaces in the area.
Lake Eola Park (downtown) — The centerpiece of downtown Orlando. A 0.9-mile walking path around the lake, the iconic fountain (lit at night), swan boats (rental, not free), and a Sunday farmers market. The backdrop of the downtown skyline is photogenic.
Harry P. Leu Gardens ($, but free first Monday) — 50-acre botanical garden. Free on the first Monday of each month. Roses, camellias, tropical plants, and a historic house museum.
Big Tree Park (Longwood) — Home to “The Senator’s Partner,” a massive bald cypress tree. Free parking and a short boardwalk trail through the swamp. The original 3,500-year-old Senator was lost to fire in 2012, but the surrounding forest is still impressive.
Disney Springs & Universal CityWalk (Free Entry)
Disney Springs — You don’t need a park ticket to visit Disney Springs. Shopping, restaurants, live music, street performers, and the World of Disney store (the largest Disney store in the world). Free parking. Free entry.
Universal CityWalk — Same concept. Restaurants, shops, and nightlife without a park ticket. Free entry (parking has a fee, but it’s free after 6 PM).
Natural Springs (Within 1 Hour)
Wekiwa Springs State Park (30 min north) — Crystal-clear 72°F spring with swimming, kayaking, and hiking. Vehicle entry fee ($6), but once inside, swimming and trails are included. One of the closest springs to Orlando.
Kelly Park / Rock Springs (45 min north) — Float down a spring-fed lazy river on a tube through a tropical forest. Inner tubes available for rent. The water is crystal clear and the experience is pure old Florida.
Blue Spring State Park (45 min north) — Manatee viewing (winter) and spring swimming (summer). See wildlife section for details.
Free Events
Farmers Markets — Lake Eola Market (Sunday), Winter Park Market (Saturday), and Celebration Market (Sunday) all have free entry with vendors selling local produce, crafts, and prepared foods.
Wall Street Plaza (downtown) — Several bars and restaurants on a pedestrian block. Free live music on many evenings.
Orlando Mural Tour — Self-guided walking tour of downtown and Mills 50 neighborhood murals. The city has invested in public art and the murals are genuinely good.
