Celery City
Sanford is one of Central Florida's oldest incorporated cities — a steamboat and rail hub that grew citrus until the Great Freeze, then reinvented itself around celery and earned the nickname 'Celery City.' The countdown on this page starts with that story and the famous RiverWalk along the St. Johns River; the rest of downtown earns the trip.
First Street and what lines it
Historic First Street holds the core: boutiques, antique stores, galleries, and murals (including the fire department mural), plus craft breweries and a new food hall with multiple vendors. The honest structural tip from the complete tour here: downtown is big enough that they recommend driving between its sections rather than treating it as one stroll.
The landmarks
- The Ritz Theater — an 823-seat house opened in 1923, closed in 1978, restored and reopened in 2000; today it's the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, hosting film festivals and theater
- Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe — the authentic German restaurant two separate videos on this page single out
- Wondermade — the marshmallow shop (gold champagne marshmallows, per VISIT FLORIDA's segment) that became a Sanford signature
The pitch
Abby's Spots calls Sanford one of Central Florida's most underrated downtowns — reliably uncrowded where the attraction districts are mobbed. It's also the same town as the Central Florida Zoo, 25 minutes from downtown Orlando: pair them and you've built a full Sanford day.
