The Manatee Capital of the World
Crystal River — a town of about 3,400 around Kings Bay, roughly an hour and 45 minutes west of Orlando — hosts the largest winter aggregation of manatees anywhere: over 700 manatees in this one bay in winter, more than a thousand across Citrus County's waters. It's also one of the only places on the planet where you can legally get in the water with them, which is why every guide here calls the swim a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list experience.
Season is everything
The manatees crowd in when the Gulf cools: mid-November through March is the reliable window (the refuge frames the season as November to April), with 100-plus animals at Three Sisters Springs on a good winter morning. The swim films start at 6:30 a.m. in 43-degree air for the best encounters — and note that Three Sisters has seasonal in-water restrictions during manatee season, so access is managed, not a free-for-all. Outside the season, the springs are beautiful and the manatees are mostly gone; plan the trip for winter or don't plan it around manatees.
Manners are mandatory
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's own 'Manatee Manners' briefing is in this set — the official rules every swimmer learns before getting in the water at the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. The tour guides add the practical layer: how booking works, what to expect in the water, and launches from Hunter Springs Park ($5 at filming) if you're kayaking in yourself. One vlog rounds out the day properly: swim at dawn, waterfront lunch, dolphins at sunset if you're lucky.
