Explore Oceanside

SoCal surf, coastal living, and Pacific Ocean views

Things to Do in Oceanside, California

Oceanside is the real Southern California — not the Hollywood version, not the tourist-polished San Diego version, but a genuine surf town where the pier is made of wood, the tacos come from roadside stands, and the beach isn’t overrun with selfie sticks.

Sitting 35 miles north of San Diego on the North County coast, Oceanside has a classic wooden pier, a revitalized harbor, a historic Spanish mission, and some of the best surf breaks in the region. Camp Pendleton Marine Base borders it to the north, which means miles of undeveloped coastline and a military-town grit that keeps things authentic.

The Oceanside Pier & Beach

The Oceanside Pier stretches nearly 2,000 feet into the Pacific — one of the longest wooden recreational piers on the West Coast. Ruby’s Diner sits at the end (burgers, shakes, and ocean views from every seat). Fishing from the pier is free and doesn’t require a license.

The beach below the pier is where the surf culture lives. Oceanside hosts the SuperGirl Surf Pro competition and several other WSL events throughout the year. The beach is wide, the water is surprisingly warm by SoCal standards (thanks to a south-facing orientation), and the vibe is laid-back.

Strand Beach runs south from the pier — a paved path for walking, running, and cycling that connects to the Carlsbad coastal trail. Rentals for bikes, surrey carts, and beach gear are available near the pier.

Surf Culture & Lessons

Oceanside has been a surf town since the 1960s, and the culture is still deeply embedded here. The waves are consistent, the locals are (mostly) welcoming, and the conditions are ideal for learning.

Surf lessons are available from multiple operators right at the pier. Most offer 90-minute group lessons that include board rental, wetsuit, and instruction. The beach break near the pier is forgiving for beginners.

California Surf Museum — A small but excellent museum downtown documenting the history of surfing from Polynesian origins to modern big-wave riding. Rotating exhibits, vintage boards, and surf memorabilia. The Bethany Hamilton exhibit (the surfer who lost her arm to a shark and returned to competition) is a highlight.

Harbor District

Oceanside Harbor is a working marina and fishing port that’s been revitalized into a walkable waterfront district with restaurants, shops, and boat tours.

Harbor Fish & Chips — Institution-grade fish and chips right on the harbor. Cash only, no frills, outstanding quality.

Oceanside Harbor Village — Shops, galleries, and restaurants along the harbor. Whale watching tours depart from here (December through April). Fishing charters run year-round targeting yellowtail, calico bass, and seasonal bluefin tuna.

Harbor Beach — A small, protected beach inside the harbor that’s calmer than the open ocean beaches. Good for families with young kids who want gentler water.

Mission San Luis Rey

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia — founded in 1798 — is the largest of California’s 21 Spanish missions and one of the most beautiful. Known as the “King of the Missions,” it sits on 56 acres of gardens and grounds about 4 miles inland from the coast.

The mission church is still active, and the grounds include a museum, a historic cemetery, the lavandería (laundry area with original stone basins), and extensive gardens. The Pepper Tree Courtyard is a peaceful spot that feels removed from the modern city entirely.

Self-guided tours run daily. If you visit one California mission, this is a strong contender.

Food & Drink

Oceanside’s food scene punches above its weight — a mix of authentic Mexican, craft beer, and SoCal coastal cuisine.

Tacos — 333 Pacific has upscale seafood with ocean views, but the real action is at the taco shops. Colima’s (multiple locations) and Rockin’ Baja Lobster (harbor) are local favorites. For street-style fish tacos, the stands along Coast Highway deliver.

Craft beer — Oceanside has a growing brewery scene. Bagby Beer Company (downtown, massive space, excellent beer and food), Belching Beaver (multiple locations in North County), and Stone Brewing’s Liberty Station taproom is 30 minutes south in San Diego.

Breakfast — Beach Break Cafe near the pier is the go-to morning spot. The Hill Street Country Club downtown has a retro diner vibe with strong coffee and creative plates.

Nearby Day Trips

Oceanside’s location on the North County coast puts you within easy reach of some of the best attractions in Southern California.

LEGOLAND California (10 minutes south in Carlsbad) — The ultimate destination for families with kids ages 2-12. Over 60 rides, shows, and attractions plus LEGOLAND Water Park and SEA LIFE Aquarium. Allow a full day.

Carlsbad (10 minutes south) — The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch bloom with 50 acres of giant ranunculus flowers from March through May. Carlsbad Village has boutique shopping and oceanfront dining. Carlsbad State Beach is excellent.

San Diego (35 minutes south) — The San Diego Zoo (Balboa Park), the Gaslamp Quarter, USS Midway Museum, La Jolla Cove, and one of the best food cities in America. Could easily fill multiple days.

Temecula Wine Country (30 minutes inland) — Over 40 wineries in the rolling hills east of Oceanside. Wine tasting, vineyard tours, and hot air balloon rides over the valley. A completely different landscape from the coast.

Encinitas & Swami’s Beach (15 minutes south) — A surf town with a famous point break, the Self-Realization Fellowship gardens and meditation center, and excellent restaurants along the Coast Highway.

→ Anaheim & Disneyland — 1 Hour North

Practical Tips

Getting around: Downtown Oceanside and the pier area are walkable. The Coaster commuter train stops in Oceanside and runs south to San Diego — an excellent way to visit the city without driving. The Sprinter light rail runs east to Escondido. For LEGOLAND, Temecula, or San Diego attractions, you’ll want a car.

Weather: Oceanside has mild coastal weather year-round. Summers are warm and dry (70s-80s). Winters are mild (60s). May and June often have “May Gray” / “June Gloom” — overcast marine layer mornings that burn off by midday. September and October are often the warmest, clearest months.

Parking: Free 2-hour street parking is available downtown and near the pier. The pier parking lot fills early on weekends in summer — arrive before 10 AM. The harbor has paid parking.
