Day Trips from New York City
New York City is an island metropolis surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside on the East Coast. Within 2 hours you can be hiking mountain ridges, wine tasting in the Hudson Valley, or lounging on a beach that feels nothing like the city.
Cold Spring & Hudson Highlands — 1 Hour North
A charming village on the Hudson River with antique shops, restaurants, and access to some of the best hiking near NYC.
Breakneck Ridge — One of the most popular hikes near the city. A steep scramble to ridge-top views of the Hudson River. 3.5 miles, strenuous. Accessible by Metro-North train (no car needed).
Main Street — A walkable village street with independent shops, galleries, and restaurants. Hudson Hil’s Café for brunch.
Storm King Art Center — 1.5 Hours North
500 acres of rolling hills with massive outdoor sculptures by Alexander Calder, Richard Serra, Maya Lin, and dozens more. One of the world’s premier outdoor sculpture parks. The scale of the art against the Hudson Valley landscape is extraordinary.
The Hamptons — 2 Hours East
Long Island’s legendary beach communities. The beaches are beautiful (Coopers Beach in Southampton is regularly ranked among the best in the US), the restaurants are excellent, and the people-watching is peak East Coast.
Montauk — At the very tip of Long Island. Surf, the lighthouse, and a more laid-back vibe than the rest of the Hamptons. Clam bars and sunset at Ditch Plains.
Fire Island — 1.5 Hours East
A barrier island accessible only by ferry (no cars). 32 miles of pristine beach, boardwalk communities, and the Fire Island National Seashore. The Sunken Forest is a rare maritime holly forest. Cherry Grove and the Pines have a vibrant LGBTQ+ community and culture.
Hudson Valley Wine & Food — 1-2 Hours North
Beacon — The Dia:Beacon museum (massive contemporary art in a former factory), Main Street restaurants and shops, and Long Dock Park on the Hudson River.
Hudson Valley wineries and cideries — Dozens of tasting rooms along the river. Brotherhood Winery (America’s oldest winery) and Millbrook Vineyards are popular stops.
Atlantic City — 2.5 Hours South
Boardwalk, casinos, and beach. A completely different vibe from the city. Budget-friendly compared to NYC, especially for food and entertainment.
