Best Breakfast & Brunch in New York City
New York runs on breakfast. The bagels are a food group. The diners never close. The brunch scene has turned waiting in line into a competitive sport. And the coffee — from corner bodegas to third-wave roasters — is as essential as the subway.
Bagels
Russ & Daughters (Lower East Side) — Since 1914. The gold standard for lox, cream cheese, and bagels. The Super Heebster and the classic smoked salmon with cream cheese on an everything bagel are perfection.
Absolute Bagels (Upper West Side) — No-frills, cash-only, and the sesame bagel fresh from the oven might be the best single bite in Manhattan.
Ess-a-Bagel (Midtown) — Massive hand-rolled bagels with an overwhelming variety of spreads.
Tompkins Square Bagels (East Village) — The newer contender. Consistently ranked among the best in the city.
Classic Diners
Veselka (East Village) — Ukrainian diner open 24 hours. Pierogies, borscht, and the challah French toast. A neighborhood institution since 1954.
Tom’s Restaurant (Morningside Heights) — Yes, the Seinfeld diner exterior. But the food — especially the cherry-lime rickey and the pancakes — is legitimately good.
Russ & Daughters Café (Lower East Side) — The sit-down restaurant version. Eggs with smoked salmon, latkes, and the full Russ & Daughters experience at a table rather than a counter.
Brunch Destinations
Clinton St. Baking Company (Lower East Side) — Blueberry pancakes that regularly make “best in NYC” lists. Expect a line. Weekend brunch only until 4 PM.
Jack’s Wife Freda (multiple locations) — Mediterranean-inspired brunch. Shakshuka, green shakshuka, and the rosewater waffle. The original on Lafayette Street has the most character.
Buvette (West Village) — Tiny French gastrotheque with a brunch that feels like a Parisian apartment. Croque madame, tartines, and excellent coffee in a space that seats maybe 30.
Coffee
Devoción (Williamsburg / Flatiron) — Colombian coffee roasted in Brooklyn. The Williamsburg flagship has a greenhouse-style space filled with plants.
Stumptown Coffee (multiple locations) — Portland’s roaster in NYC. The Ace Hotel lobby location is an institution.
Joe Coffee (multiple locations) — NYC-born chain with consistently excellent espresso. The waverly place original is the classic.
Bodega coffee — $1-2 for a coffee in a blue-and-white Greek cup from any corner bodega. It’s not specialty coffee. It’s New York coffee. And millions of people drink it every morning.
