Nashville Honky-Tonks — Complete Guide to Lower Broadway
Lower Broadway is a 5-block stretch of neon-lit honky-tonk bars running from the Cumberland River to 5th Avenue. Live music pours out of every door from 10 AM until 3 AM, seven days a week, with no cover charge at most venues. Here’s the block-by-block breakdown.
The Legends
Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge — the most famous honky-tonk in Nashville, directly behind the Ryman Auditorium. Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Patsy Cline all played here before they were famous. Three floors of live music, rooftop bar. The purple walls are covered in signed photos. Robert’s Western World — the purist’s choice, playing traditional country and honky-tonk music. The fried bologna sandwich is a Nashville institution. The Stage — four floors of live music with a rooftop overlooking Broadway.
The New Breed
Luke Bryan’s 32 Bridge — six floors, multiple stages, a rooftop with 360-degree views. The biggest multi-level entertainment complex on Broadway. Blake Shelton’s Ole Red — four floors, TV show tie-in, solid live music. Jason Aldean’s Kitchen + Rooftop Bar — rock-country focus, huge rooftop. Garth Brooks’ Friends in Low Places — Garth’s massive multi-floor bar opened in 2024-2025. Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk — love him or hate him, the venue is impressive. These celebrity bars are bigger, flashier, and more produced than the traditional joints.
How Broadway Works
No cover charge at most honky-tonks — the bands play for tips. Tip the band. Seriously — $5-20 in the tip jar is how these musicians pay rent. Minimum drink purchase is usually enforced (one drink per set). Drinks are $8-15 for beer, $12-18 for cocktails. The music starts around 10 AM and runs until 2-3 AM. Weekends are packed from 5 PM on. Weekday afternoons are the sweet spot — fewer crowds, same great music.
Beyond the Main Strip
The Listening Room Cafe — songwriter rounds where you hear the people who wrote the songs. Sit 10 feet from Grammy-winning writers performing their hits acoustically. This is the real Nashville music experience. Station Inn — the world’s best bluegrass venue. Small, intimate, and legendary. Exit/In — indie rock and alternative since 1971. The Basement East — the ‘Beast’ hosts emerging artists and established indie acts.
Tips for a Broadway Night
Wear comfortable shoes — you’ll walk the whole strip. Start at one end and work your way down. Don’t bring a large group expecting to get a table — stand and mingle. Cover bands play the celebrity bars; original artists play Robert’s, Layla’s, and The Listening Room. Thursday through Saturday nights are the most energetic. Sunday through Wednesday are more laid-back and you’ll have more room.
