Nashville Honky-Tonk Guide — Lower Broadway Bar-by-Bar

Nashville Honky-Tonk Guide — Lower Broadway Bar-by-Bar

Lower Broadway between 2nd and 5th Avenues is a four-block stretch of nonstop live music, neon, and noise. Every bar has a band. None charge cover. The music starts at 10 AM and doesn’t stop until 3 AM.

Here’s what each honky-tonk is actually like so you know where to spend your time.

The Classic Honky-Tonks

Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge (422 Broadway) — The most famous bar in Nashville. Three floors of live music. The ground floor is the original honky-tonk — tight, loud, and packed. The second floor has a balcony overlooking Broadway. The rooftop has a separate stage. The back door opens onto Printer’s Alley and the alley behind the Ryman Auditorium. Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller, and Waylon Jennings all played here when they were nobodies.

Robert’s Western World (416 Broadway) — The locals’ favorite. Country and rockabilly with an emphasis on the music. The house band Brazilbilly plays traditional country with Brazilian-born musicians — it’s one of the most entertaining bands on Broadway. Fried bologna sandwiches are the signature food. No pretense, great music.

Layla’s (418 Broadway) — Bluegrass and traditional country. Smaller and more intimate than Tootsie’s. The musicians here tend toward the more skilled end of the Broadway spectrum.

The Stage on Broadway (412 Broadway) — Rock and country rock. Bigger space, bigger sound. The upstairs balcony has good views of the street below.

The Celebrity Bars

Luke Bryan’s 32 Bridge (301 Broadway) — Six floors, multiple stages, and a rooftop. Slick production, strong drinks, and a crowd that’s there for the experience as much as the music. More nightclub than honky-tonk.

Jason Aldean’s Kitchen + Rooftop Bar (307 Broadway) — Similar concept — multi-floor, rooftop, produced. The food is actually decent.

Blake Shelton’s Ole Red (300 Broadway) — Shelton’s bar. Four floors, including a rooftop with downtown views. The music leans country (obviously).

Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk & Rock ‘N’ Roll Steakhouse (221 Broadway) — Exactly what the name suggests. Multiple floors, steakhouse upstairs, and music that leans rock. The name alone is a conversation starter.

How to Navigate Broadway

Start early. If you want to hear the music without fighting crowds, come between 10 AM and 4 PM. The bands are just as good and you can actually get a seat.

Walk the whole strip. Step into each bar for a song or two. If the band is good, stay. If not, walk 30 feet and try the next one. That’s the beauty of Broadway — the next option is always steps away.

No cover charge. This is the rule on Broadway. Tip the band. They’re playing for tips and their share of the drink revenue. $5-10 in the tip bucket when you like a song goes a long way.

Drink prices. Beer is $6-10. Mixed drinks are $10-15. The celebrity bars are at the higher end. Tootsie’s and Robert’s are at the lower end.

The crowd changes. Daytime is more chill — couples, families, music lovers. After 9 PM it’s a party. By midnight it’s chaos. Plan accordingly.

Pedal taverns and party buses. You’ll see them everywhere. Groups on multi-passenger bikes pedaling down Broadway while drinking and blasting music. They’re a Nashville thing. Love them or hate them, they’re hard to ignore.
