Things to Do in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach runs for 60 miles along the South Carolina coast — what locals call the Grand Strand. It’s one of the most popular beach vacation destinations on the East Coast, drawing 20+ million visitors a year.
The vibe is classic American beach town: boardwalk amusements, seafood buffets, mini golf on every corner, and a surprising amount of world-class golf.
The Beach & Boardwalk
The beach itself is the main attraction — wide, sandy, and swimmable from spring through fall. The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk runs about a mile along the oceanfront with amusement rides, shops, and restaurants.
SkyWheel — A 187-foot observation wheel on the boardwalk. The climate-controlled gondolas give you views up and down the Grand Strand. Best at night when the wheel is lit up and the coastline sparkles.
Second Avenue Pier — 900 feet over the ocean. Fishing allowed (rod rentals available). The pier house has a restaurant and bar with ocean views.
Family Kingdom Amusement Park — Right on the boardwalk. Old-school rides including a wooden roller coaster (Swamp Fox), water park, go-karts. Much cheaper than the big theme parks — individual ride tickets or wristbands.
Broadway at the Beach
The Grand Strand’s main entertainment complex — 350 acres of shops, restaurants, attractions, and nightclubs built around a 23-acre lake.
WonderWorks — An upside-down building (literally) with interactive science exhibits, a ropes course, and a laser tag arena. Good for a rainy day with kids.
Ripley’s Aquarium — Walk-through tunnel under a shark tank, touch tanks, jellyfish gallery, and a sea turtle rescue exhibit. One of the better aquariums on the East Coast.
Topgolf — Multi-level driving range with food and drinks. Popular for groups.
Nightlife — Broadway has several clubs and bars. Senor Frogs, LuLu’s (Jimmy Buffett’s sister’s place), and the comedy clubs along the strip.
Golf
Myrtle Beach is called the “Golf Capital of the World” and it’s not an exaggeration. There are over 80 golf courses within 30 miles, ranging from affordable public courses to championship layouts.
The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, TPC Myrtle Beach, and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club are among the top-rated. Tee time packages are available everywhere — many hotels and resorts bundle golf with your stay.
Green fees range from $30 for a basic municipal course to $200+ for the premium layouts. Spring and fall are peak golf season.
Restaurants & Seafood
Calabash-Style Seafood — Named after the tiny fishing village of Calabash, NC (just south of the border). Lightly battered, fried seafood — shrimp, oysters, flounder. Multiple buffet restaurants serve this style.
The Original Benjamin’s — The most famous seafood buffet in Myrtle Beach. 170+ item buffet including crab legs, shrimp, and a full dessert bar.
Dead Dog Saloon — On the MarshWalk in Murrells Inlet. Waterfront dining, live music, and fresh catch. Murrells Inlet is the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina” — the restaurant row along the marsh is worth the 20-minute drive south.
Mr. Fish — Local favorite for fish tacos, poke bowls, and fresh seafood at reasonable prices.
Barefoot Landing
North Myrtle Beach’s answer to Broadway at the Beach. A waterfront shopping and dining complex with an alligator adventure park, House of Blues, and the Alabama Theatre (country music variety show from the band Alabama).
Quieter and more laid-back than Broadway — good for couples or a less chaotic evening out.
Day Trips
Brookgreen Gardens — 30 minutes south. A 9,100-acre sculpture garden and wildlife preserve. One of the most beautiful outdoor spaces on the East Coast. The garden has the largest collection of American figurative sculpture in the country.
Huntington Beach State Park — Adjacent to Brookgreen. Uncrowded beach, nature trails, and Atalaya Castle (the winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington).
Georgetown — Historic port town 35 minutes south. Harborwalk, ghost tours, rice plantation tours, and the South Carolina Maritime Museum.
Pawleys Island — The “arrogantly shabby” beach community south of Myrtle. Quiet, residential, hammock shops, and one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast.
