Free Things to Do in Miami Beach
Miami Beach looks expensive. The bottle-service clubs and designer shopping certainly are. But the beach, the art, the architecture, and many of the best cultural experiences in Miami are completely free.
South Beach & Art Deco
South Beach — Three miles of white sand, warm turquoise water, and some of the best people-watching on earth. Free to access from any street end between 1st and 46th Streets. Lummus Park (the grassy strip between Ocean Drive and the beach) is the classic South Beach scene — volleyball, cyclists, rollerbladers, and palm trees.
Art Deco Historic District — The largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world. Walk Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue between 5th and 23rd Streets. The Miami Design Preservation League offers guided walking tours ($30), but self-guided walking is free — just look up at the buildings. The pastel colors and geometric details are best photographed in morning light.
Lincoln Road Mall — 10-block open-air pedestrian promenade. Restaurants, galleries, street performers, and a weekly farmers market (Sunday). Free to walk and explore.
Wynwood
Wynwood Walls — The most famous street art museum in the world. Outdoor murals by artists from around the globe on warehouse walls. Free to view from the street (the main Wynwood Walls courtyard sometimes has a small admission fee for special exhibitions, but the surrounding neighborhood murals are always free).
Wynwood neighborhood walk — The blocks surrounding the Walls are covered in murals, galleries, and creative spaces. Just walk and discover.
Parks & Nature
Crandon Park Beach (Key Biscayne) — Often ranked among the best beaches in America. Calmer water than South Beach, coconut palms, and a sandbar you can walk to at low tide. $8 vehicle entry for the park, but the beach itself is included.
South Pointe Park (South Beach tip) — Waterfront park at the southern tip of Miami Beach with views of Fisher Island, cruise ships entering Government Cut, and the Port of Miami. Free. Great sunset spot.
Bayside Marketplace — Waterfront shopping center on Biscayne Bay. Free live music, views of mega-yachts, and the downtown Miami skyline across the water.
Free Culture
Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) — Free second Saturday — World-class contemporary art museum on Biscayne Bay. Free on the second Saturday of each month.
Little Havana / Calle Ocho — Walk the main street of Miami’s Cuban community. The Domino Park (Máximo Gómez Park) has old men playing dominoes, the cigar shops are fragrant, and the street murals tell the story of the Cuban exile community. Free to walk and absorb.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens exterior — The Italian Renaissance-style villa gardens on Biscayne Bay are partially visible from the waterfront without admission. The interior requires tickets ($25), but the grounds and bay views are accessible.
