Maui with Kids — Family Guide
Maui is one of the best family destinations in the world. The beaches are calm enough for toddlers, the marine life is accessible to snorkelers of any age, and the island’s natural beauty makes every drive an adventure.
Best Family Beaches
Ka’anapali Beach — The resort beach on Maui’s west side. Calm water, lifeguards, and the Black Rock cliff jumping area for older kids (or brave parents). The Whaler’s Village shopping center is right on the beach for snack runs.
Baby Beach (Lahaina) — A shallow, protected lagoon perfect for toddlers and young swimmers. The water is rarely more than waist-deep for adults.
Kapalua Bay — A sheltered bay with calm, clear water and excellent snorkeling right from shore. Sea turtles are frequently spotted.
Snorkeling with Kids
Maui’s warm, clear water and abundant marine life make it one of the best places in the world for kids to try snorkeling.
Kapalua Bay and Napili Bay — Calm, shallow, and loaded with tropical fish and sea turtles. Gentle enough for first-time snorkelers.
Molokini Crater (boat trip) — Older kids (8+) will love snorkeling in the volcanic crater. The water is crystal clear with 100+ foot visibility.
Gear: Most resorts provide snorkel gear. If not, Boss Frog’s and Snorkel Bob’s have kid-sized rental equipment at shops across the island.
Family Activities
Maui Ocean Center — One of the best aquariums in Hawaii. A 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit with sharks, rays, and tropical fish. The turtle pool and the touch pool are kid favorites.
Surfing Goat Dairy (upcountry) — Farm tours with goat feeding, cheese tasting, and a beautiful setting on the slopes of Haleakalā. The evening “casual” tour lets kids feed baby goats.
Maui Tropical Plantation — Tram tour through tropical fruit orchards and gardens. Zip lines for older kids. The farm stand has fresh fruit and macadamia nuts.
Sugar Cane Train — Historic narrow-gauge railroad between Lahaina and Ka’anapali (check current operating status — has had periodic closures).
Whale Watching (December–April)
Humpback whales migrate to Maui to breed and calve. From December through April, you can see them from the beach, from the road, and especially from whale watching boats. Pacific Whale Foundation and Trilogy run family-friendly trips with naturalist guides.
Kids are mesmerized by breaching whales. It’s one of those experiences they’ll remember into adulthood.
