Road to Hana — Complete Driving Guide, Stops & Tips
The Road to Hana is a 64-mile highway winding along Maui’s northeastern coast through 620 curves and 59 bridges — one of the most beautiful drives in the world.
The Drive
Highway 360 runs from Kahului to Hana through tropical rainforest, over one-lane bridges, past waterfalls, bamboo forests, and black sand beaches. The drive takes 3-4 hours one way without stops — but stopping is the point. Allow a full day (10-12 hours round trip). Start early (6-7 AM) to beat traffic and have time for stops.
Best Stops
Twin Falls (mile 2) — easy short hike to a waterfall, good warm-up. Garden of Eden (mile 10) — botanical garden with ocean views ($15 entry). Ke’anae Peninsula (mile 17) — a dramatic lava rock peninsula with crashing waves and a historic church. Wai’anapanapa State Park (mile 32) — black sand beach, sea caves, and blowholes (reservation required for parking). Hana Town — the tiny town at the end of the road, with Hasegawa General Store and Hana Bay.
Beyond Hana
If you keep driving past Hana, you reach the Seven Sacred Pools (Ohe’o Gulch) in Haleakalā National Park — tiered waterfall pools you can swim in (when open). The road continues around the south side of the island as a rough, partially unpaved road through open rangeland. Some rental car companies prohibit this section — check your contract.
Tips
Gas up in Paia (last reliable gas station) or Hana. Bring snacks and water — food options are limited. Download an offline map — cell service is spotty. Pull over for faster traffic behind you (local etiquette). Motion sickness is real on this road — sit in the front seat and look at the horizon.
