Day Trips on Maui
Maui is a small island with enormous variety — you can drive from sea level to 10,000 feet in 90 minutes, snorkel in a volcanic crater, and wind through 600 hairpin turns on one of the world’s greatest drives, all in separate day trips.
Haleakalā Sunrise — 1.5 Hours from Resort Areas
Watching the sunrise from 10,023 feet above sea level — above the clouds, with the sun breaking over the crater rim — is one of the most awe-inspiring natural experiences in America.
The logistics: Leave your resort by 3-4 AM. The summit is 1.5 hours from Ka’anapali/Wailea. You’ll be driving in complete darkness up a winding mountain road. Bring warm clothes — it’s 30-40°F at the summit at dawn, even when it’s 80°F at the beach.
Reservations required: The National Park Service requires reservations for sunrise viewing ($1 per car, plus $30 park entry). Book at recreation.gov 60 days in advance — they sell out immediately.
After sunrise: Hike the Sliding Sands Trail into the crater. The volcanic landscape looks like Mars. Even a 30-minute descent into the crater is worthwhile.
Road to Hana — Full Day
The most famous drive in Hawaii. 64 miles of winding coastal highway with 620 curves and 59 bridges through rainforest, past waterfalls, and along sea cliffs.
Key stops: Twin Falls (easy, short waterfall hike), Wai’anapanapa State Park (black sand beach and sea caves), Hana town (tiny, peaceful, the destination without being the point), and ‘Ohe’o Gulch / Seven Sacred Pools (tiered waterfall pools — check if open, sometimes closed for safety).
Tips: Start early (by 7 AM). Drive the entire loop (continue past Hana through the “back side” for a different return). Bring snacks and water. Gas up in Pa’ia. Take it slow — the road IS the experience.
Molokini Crater Snorkeling — Half Day
A crescent-shaped volcanic crater 3 miles off Maui’s south shore. The water inside the crater is crystal clear (visibility 100+ feet) with abundant tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally reef sharks and manta rays.
Boats depart from Ma’alaea Harbor and Kihei. Half-day trips (4-5 hours) typically include snorkel gear, breakfast, and lunch. Book morning trips — afternoon winds make the water choppier.
Lānaʻi Ferry — Half or Full Day
Take the Expeditions ferry from Lahaina Harbor to the island of Lānaʻi (45 minutes each way). Rent a Jeep and explore Shipwreck Beach, Garden of the Gods (lunar-like rock formations), and Hulopoʻe Bay (one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii). The island has one town, one luxury resort, and almost no tourists.
Upcountry Maui — Half Day
The slopes of Haleakalā between 2,000-4,000 feet have a completely different climate from the beach — cool mornings, farms, ranches, and lavender fields.
Surfing Goat Dairy — Farm tour and cheese tasting. The sunset tours include feeding the goats.
Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm — Walking gardens with ocean views and lavender everything — scones, tea, chocolate.
Upcountry Farmers Market (Kula) — Saturday mornings. Local produce, flowers, and prepared food.
