Best Restaurants in Maui
Maui’s food scene is defined by the ocean, the farms, and the cultural mashup of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Portuguese cuisines that created something uniquely local. Here’s where to eat.
Local & Hawaiian
Mama’s Fish House (Paia, North Shore) — Regularly cited as one of the best restaurants in Hawaii. Oceanfront setting, fresh-caught fish with the fisherman’s name on the menu, and Polynesian-inspired preparations. Expensive. Worth it. Reservations essential — book weeks ahead.
Tin Roof (Kahului) — Chef Sheldon Simeon’s (Top Chef) plate lunch counter. Mochiko chicken, garlic noodles, and pork belly bowls. Counter-service, affordable, and some of the best food on the island. Lunch only, closes early when they sell out.
Da Kitchen (Kahului) — Local-style plate lunches. Loco moco (hamburger patty over rice with gravy and a fried egg), kalua pork, and chicken katsu. Portions are enormous. This is how Maui eats.
Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop (Olowalu) — Roadside stop between Lahaina and Kihei. Pies (savory and sweet) that are famous across the island. The banana cream pie and the pot pie are legendary.
Fine Dining
Merriman’s (Kapalua) — Peter Merriman pioneered Hawaii Regional Cuisine — using local ingredients in a fine dining context. Oceanfront at Kapalua Bay. The macadamia nut-crusted mahi-mahi is the signature dish.
Spago (Four Seasons Wailea) — Wolfgang Puck’s Hawaii outpost. Oceanfront at the Four Seasons. Sushi, Asian-fusion, and California-meets-Hawaii fine dining.
Food Trucks & Cheap Eats
Coconut’s Fish Café (Kihei) — Fish tacos that are worth the wait. Blackened ahi, mahi-mahi, and shrimp tacos with fresh salsa. Small space, big flavor.
Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice (multiple locations) — The best shave ice in Hawaii (and that’s saying something). Finely shaved ice with tropical syrups and options for condensed milk, mochi balls, or ice cream on the bottom.
South Maui Fish Company (Kihei) — Fresh fish plates and poke bowls. Simple, fresh, and affordable.
Breakfast
Kihei Caffe (Kihei) — Massive breakfast plates at reasonable prices. The line starts early. The loco moco and the banana macadamia nut pancakes are popular.
Gazebo Restaurant (Napili) — Oceanfront breakfast with fried rice, macadamia nut pancakes, and views of sea turtles in the bay. Tiny space, long waits, and worth every minute.
Grandma’s Coffee House (Upcountry) — On the road to Haleakalā. Coffee grown on-site, pastries, and breakfast plates. Stop here on the way down from sunrise at the summit.
