Outdoor Activities Near Las Vegas

Las Vegas sits in the Mojave Desert at the edge of some of the most dramatic landscapes in the American West. Within an hour of the Strip you can hike through red rock canyons, kayak the Colorado River, mountain bike in desert terrain, or rock climb on world-class sandstone.

Hiking

Red Rock Canyon (30 min) — The go-to. Calico Tanks trail (moderate, 2.5 mi) ends at a natural rock tank with Strip views. Keystone Thrust (easy, 2 mi) shows 180-million-year geology. Ice Box Canyon (moderate, 2.6 mi) has a seasonal waterfall in a slot canyon.

Valley of Fire (1 hr) — Fire Wave (easy, 1.5 mi) is the signature — striped red and white sandstone that looks like flowing waves. White Domes loop (moderate, 1 mi) passes through a narrow canyon.

Mount Charleston (45 min) — 11,916 feet. The antidote to desert heat — 30-40°F cooler than the Strip in summer. Bristlecone Trail (moderate, 6 mi) reaches elevations with ancient bristlecone pines. Cathedral Rock (moderate, 3 mi) has excellent views.

Gold Strike Hot Springs (30 min) — A canyon scramble down to natural hot springs on the Colorado River near Hoover Dam. Ropes, ladders, and bouldering required. Not for beginners. Closed in summer (dangerously hot).

Kayaking & Water Sports

Black Canyon (Colorado River below Hoover Dam) — Kayak or paddleboard through narrow canyon walls on the Colorado River. Emerald Cave (a grotto where the water glows green) is the highlight. Guided tours available. One of the most unique water experiences in the West.

Lake Mead — Jet skiing, wakeboarding, pontoon boat rentals, and swimming. Boulder Beach and Callville Bay are the main access points.

Rock Climbing

Red Rock Canyon — One of the premier rock climbing destinations in North America. Multi-pitch trad routes on Calico Hills, sport climbing at Black Velvet Wall, and bouldering throughout the conservation area. Guide services available for beginners.

Mountain Biking

Bootleg Canyon (Boulder City) — Purpose-built mountain bike trail system 30 minutes from the Strip. 35+ miles of trails ranging from beginner flow to expert downhill. The proximity to Vegas makes it the obvious choice.

Blue Diamond / Cottonwood Valley (Red Rock area) — Desert singletrack with red rock scenery. Moderate difficulty.

Zip Lines & Adventures

Bootleg Canyon Zip Line (Boulder City) — Four zip lines covering 1.5 miles, reaching speeds of 60 mph above the desert floor. Views of Lake Mead and the Colorado River.

SlotZilla (Fremont Street) — Zip line over the Fremont Street Experience. 1,700 feet long, 12 stories up.

When to Go

Best months for outdoor activities: October through April. Temperatures are comfortable (50-80°F) and the desert is at its most beautiful after winter rains.

Summer warning: June through September, desert temperatures exceed 110°F. Heat-related emergencies are common among unprepared hikers. If you must hike in summer, start before 6 AM and be off the trail by 10 AM. Carry 1 liter of water per hour per person.
