Discover The Sunken City Of Port Royal

The city of Port Royal Jamaica was founded in 1494 by the Spanish and was taken by the English in 1655 during the invasion of Jamaica.  The English were unable to defend the island and so the area fell to pirates.  The city had at the time of its destruction five forts protecting it and the bay could hold up to 500 ships.

At one time Port Royal was one of the largest, busiest and wealthiest Caribbean cities.  The city is located on a cape that extends off of the city of Kingston.  On June 7th, 1692 at 11:43 am, Jamaica experienced an catastrophic earthquake that was then followed by a tsunami.  The city of Port Royal was destroyed.  For a few years Port Royal was considered a Pirates utopia!

A few famous pirates of Port Royal Jamaica were Sir Henry Morgan, Calico Jack and Blackbeard Teach.
