Free Things to Do on Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head is known as an upscale resort island, but the beaches are free, the bike trails are extensive, and the natural beauty of the Lowcountry is available to everyone.
Beaches (Free)
All Hilton Head beaches are public. Access points are available at Coligny Beach Park, Driessen Beach Park, Folly Field Beach Park, and Islanders Beach Park.
Coligny Beach Park — The main public beach with parking, showers, restrooms, a playground, and seasonal lifeguards. Wide sand, calm water, and the most accessible beach on the island.
Beach at low tide — At low tide, Hilton Head’s beaches become wide, firm flats — perfect for biking (yes, people bike on the beach here), running, and searching for sand dollars.
Bike Trails (Free)
Hilton Head has over 60 miles of paved, multi-use pathways — one of the most extensive bike trail networks of any resort island in the US. Riding is free (bike rentals typically $15-25/day from numerous rental shops).
The Pinckney Island route — Cross the bridge to Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge for flat, easy trails through maritime forest and salt marsh. Excellent birdwatching.
Nature (Free)
Sea Pines Forest Preserve — 605 acres of forest with trails, a shell ring dating back 4,000 years, and abundant wildlife. Free admission (Sea Pines resort gate fee may apply if entering by car — walk or bike in free).
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge — 4,053 acres across multiple islands. Hiking and biking trails, birdwatching, and salt marsh views. Free.
Dolphin watching from shore — Bottlenose dolphins are regularly visible from the beach, especially in the morning. Harbour Town Lighthouse has elevated views for spotting.
Harbour Town (Free to Walk)
The iconic Harbour Town Marina with the candy-striped lighthouse is free to walk. Browse the shops, watch boats dock, and photograph the lighthouse (climbing to the top has a small fee).
