Tuckaleechee Caverns, in Townsend under the Smokies' foothills, is the 'greatest site under the Smokies' by its own long billing — and the films suggest the billing is defensible. The guided tour (about an hour, no self-guiding, a steady 58 degrees year-round) descends into the Big Room — among the largest cave rooms in the eastern United States, large enough, the guides say, for a football field — past draperies and columns to an underground stream. The cave was rediscovered in 1850 (per the tours' telling) and opened for tours in 1931; Tampa Jay's 63-minute megafilm at the top of this page is the most complete Tuckaleechee record on film, walked step by step with the guide's narration.

The caverns' strangest claim gets its own film: inside the cave sits what the operator bills as the world's most sensitive seismic station, listening for earthquakes worldwide — the cave's stillness makes it an ideal listening post, and the tour passes the station's story point. It is the kind of fact that makes visitors repeat the visit to friends, which is how this cave built its reputation.
The tour across years
Eight keepers of eight — this page is all narration, no filler, a rarity — filmed 2018 to 2026: the magician-hosted short tour from the venue's media library, the wishing well tradition, the entrance descent that sets the cave's scale, and first-visit reactions that all land on the same note (the Big Room's scale is the recurring astonishment). Every qualifying tour film we could find is here; the set is the cave's whole filmed record.

Townsend pairs the caverns with the Little River (tubing page in this directory) and the Heritage Center — the peaceful side's full day, about 45 minutes from the Parkway through Wears Valley or over Little River Road.
