Rainbow Falls is the tallest single-drop waterfall in the Smokies — 80 feet off Mount LeConte down LeConte Creek, named for the rainbows its mist throws on sunny afternoons. The trail climbs 2.7 miles and roughly 1,500 feet from its Roaring Fork-area trailhead, and the films do not pretend it is a stroll: the newest review on this page is a candid two stars — 'worth it once' — rescued by the cave-adjacent bluffs near the top. We keep that review on purpose. This is the waterfall for hikers, not for the Laurel Falls crowd, and the page says so.

Creek crossings on log bridges, rocky tread, steady grade: the full spring hike films the route end to end in high water (the falls at maximum roar), the lesser-known angle film covers the upstream approaches most visitors miss, and a nostalgia film from the park's trail-crew era ties the falls to the LeConte trail system — Rainbow Falls Trail is also one of the five summit routes.
The falls in seasons
Ice-edged in winter, thundering in spring, a veiled drop in dry August: the season films show all three falls. The rainbow effect needs sun angle and mist — afternoon, post-rain, clear sky is the recipe the photographers repeat.

Anyone whose knees object to 1,500 feet of rocky descent, anyone on a tight clock, and anyone who'd rather see three falls than earn one — the directory's Sugarlands and Roaring Fork pages hold the gentler water. Everyone else: this is the connoisseur's fall.
