Newfound Gap, 5,048 feet, is the crest of the park's great road — US-441 over the Smokies' spine on the Tennessee–North Carolina line, where the Rockefeller Memorial marks the park's dedication site and the Appalachian Trail crosses. This page's films carry the gap's recent drama in sequence, told with its dates, because the story matters: on August 1, 2025, a storm dropped about two inches of rain in two hours; the road at the gap washed and slid; the park closed the route — and crews reopened it in September 2025, 18 days ahead of schedule. The drive films below run both ways from the crest, before and after.

The Gatlinburg-to-gap climb and the full crossing to Cherokee anchor the page: Morton's Overlook, the switchbacks (the road's famous loop), the tunnel, and the state-line stop. The descent film covers the North Carolina side to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center — elk fields at dawn, the Mountain Farm Museum — the park's other front hall.
The closure arc
The news and park-association films document August's damage and September's reopening as dated record; a 2026 crossing film shows the restored road in normal service. Conditions change with Smokies weather — the standing lesson of this page is to check the park's road status on the day; closures here are routine in winter ice as well.

The memorial, the AT crossing, the two-state photo: every film stops at the top, and the winter film shows the crest in snow, when the gap earns its altitude.
