Grotto Falls is the Smokies' walk-behind waterfall: a 25-foot fall spilling over a rock ledge with the Trillium Gap Trail passing behind the water — the only falls in the park where the trail goes under the falls. The trailhead sits on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail (about 20 parking spaces serve it), and the same Trillium Gap Trail continues past the falls to Mount LeConte and the lodge — the route the famous llama pack train climbs with supplies on lodge days, so a llama meeting on this trail is a real possibility the films mention with delight.

Roughly 1.3–1.5 miles up to the falls through hemlock and hardwood, roots and wet rock — the accessibility film from 2025 gives the honest verdict: moderate and technical, 'hard for ambulatory access,' roots and stream crossings rather than a smooth path. Families manage it steadily; the first-timers' film logs the effort-to-payoff as strong value.
Behind the water
The walk-behind moment is the page's centerpiece: behind the curtain, wet stone, the creek falling in front of your face, salamanders in the damp. Post-rain flows are the fullest; the winter film shows the falls iced at its edges, the trail quiet.
