The Foothills Parkway is the Smokies' scenic exoskeleton — a National Park Service ridge road running the foothills' crest, built in separated sections over decades. Its western section, above Wears Valley, was completed when the famous Missing Link — 16 miles of bridges and viaducts threading the steepest crest, unfinished for 52 years — finally opened on November 10, 2018. The eastern section, toward Cosby, runs quieter and lower. Look Rock's tower detour serves both halves' visitors. No commercial traffic, no billboards, overlooks at every gap: the films call it the park drive minus the park crowds, and drive it at golden hour to prove it.

The full-drive films run the western crest end to end (Walland to Wears Valley): viaducts carrying the road across impossible slopes, the Wears Valley overlooks facing the main crest, RV-practical notes from a full-time RV crew who filmed it as a route. The sunset film times the western section to its best hour — the overlooks face the evening sun across the valley.
The east
The Cosby section gets one autumn film, all to itself: fall color over the valley floor, fewer overlooks, fewer cars — the parkway's quiet half, and for some drivers the better one.

A three-minute orientation closes the page — sections, overlooks, the Look Rock detour — for first-time drivers choosing between the parkway and the park interior on a one-drive day. Choose both if you can; choose the parkway at sunset if you cannot.
