Day Trips from Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg sits at the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains — America’s most visited national park. The surrounding region has Cherokee heritage sites, mountain towns, scenic drives, and access to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Cades Cove — 45 Minutes from Gatlinburg
An 11-mile one-way loop road through a mountain valley that was home to settlers in the early 1800s. Historic log cabins, churches, and grist mills dot the valley. Black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and coyotes are frequently spotted.
Tips: Go early (before 8 AM) or late (after 4 PM) to avoid traffic. The loop can take 2-4 hours by car on busy days. Wednesday and Saturday mornings the road is closed to vehicles for cyclists only (until 10 AM).
Clingmans Dome — 1 Hour
The highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains (6,643 feet) and the highest point in Tennessee. A half-mile paved trail leads to an observation tower with 360-degree views that can extend 100 miles on clear days. The road closes December through March.
Cherokee, NC — 45 Minutes East
The Qualla Boundary — homeland of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The Museum of the Cherokee Indian traces 13,000 years of Cherokee history. Oconaluftee Indian Village recreates an 18th-century Cherokee community. “Unto These Hills” is an outdoor drama performed in an amphitheater (summer).
The Oconaluftee Visitor Center on the North Carolina side of the park has the Mountain Farm Museum (free) with historic buildings and live demonstrations.
Pigeon Forge & Dollywood — 15 Minutes
Pigeon Forge is Gatlinburg’s larger, more commercial neighbor. Dollywood is consistently rated one of the best theme parks in the world — roller coasters, live bluegrass and gospel music, and Appalachian crafts. The Island in Pigeon Forge has restaurants, shops, and the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel.

The Blue Ridge Parkway between Cherokee and Asheville is one of the most scenic drives in the eastern US — ridgeline views, wildflower meadows, and waterfall hikes.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail — 15 Minutes
A 5.5-mile one-way loop from Gatlinburg through old-growth forest, past historic homesteads, and alongside mountain streams. Grotto Falls trail (2.6 miles round trip, walk behind the waterfall) departs from this road. Free with park entry (which is always free).
