The Alum Cave Trail is the most theatrical hike in the Smokies: through Arch Rock's stone staircase, along ledges on steel cables, to Alum Cave Bluffs — a 100-foot concave overhang that is not a cave at all — at 2.3 miles, and onward for the strong another stretch to Mount LeConte's summit. The hikers' films include a disabled hiker's full ascent (built rock stairs and bleachers making the route workable), a female Appalachian Trail thru-hiker ranking it for serious hikers, and a 2012 Alum-Cave-only POV — the oldest footage in this directory's park section.

Arch Rock first (the trail threads the rock by stairs), then Inspiration Point, then the cables — the crux above the bluffs where the path narrows to a ledge with a steel handline. The bluffs themselves: a towering dust-dry shelter where alum and saltpeter were once mined, the standard turnaround, views opening across the valley.
To the summit
The summit films continue past the bluffs to LeConte's Cliff Top and the lodge — the Alum route is the shortest and steepest of the five summit trails, which is why it is also the most filmed. The Mount LeConte page in this directory covers the summit fully; this page is the route.

The parking films are blunt: the Alum lot is one of the park's worst at midday, double-parking tickets are real, and dawn starts are the answer. Trail-crew films show the maintenance the route's popularity demands.
