Free Timeshare Vacation Packages — How They Actually Work
Let’s be real: nothing is truly “free.” But timeshare vacation promotions are as close as you’ll get to a heavily subsidized resort vacation — if you understand the deal.
The Deal
Resorts offer deeply discounted (and occasionally free) vacation packages to qualified couples in exchange for attending a 90-120 minute sales presentation about their vacation ownership program.
The resort’s bet: once you experience the property, you’ll want to buy into their program. Your bet: you’ll sit through the pitch, say “no thanks,” and enjoy 3-7 nights at a resort for a fraction of retail.
Both sides win most of the time. The resort gets qualified prospects in front of their sales team. You get a vacation at wholesale prices.
Are They Really Free?
Some promotions are genuinely free — no upfront cost, all-inclusive food and drink, sometimes even airfare credits. More commonly, you’ll pay a discounted rate:
- $99–$199 for a USA resort stay (Las Vegas, Orlando, Daytona Beach)
- $149–$499 for a Mexico or Caribbean all-inclusive stay
- Occasionally $0 for select properties trying to fill sales calendars
The catch isn’t hidden — it’s the presentation. You’re required to attend and you must meet qualification requirements (age, income, relationship status). If you skip the presentation or don’t qualify, you’ll typically be charged the full retail rate.
What Happens at the Presentation
- Welcome and tour — A sales representative shows you the resort, rooms, pools, and amenities
- The pitch — They present their vacation ownership program with pricing tiers
- The close — They ask if you’d like to buy
- You decide — Say yes, say no, or say “I need to think about it”
- Exit interview — A manager may offer a reduced package as a final offer
- You’re done — Go enjoy your vacation
The whole process takes 90-120 minutes. Some presentations run longer if you engage deeply with the sales team. A firm but polite “no” will end things faster.
Pro tip: Go in with a budget (even if that budget is $0). It’s much easier to decline when you’ve already decided your limits.
How to Qualify
Most programs require:
- Couples (married or cohabitating) — both partners must attend
- Age 28-70 (varies by resort)
- Household income $50,000+ (some require $75,000+)
- Valid major credit card
- Government photo ID for both attendees
Some programs accept singles, retirees, or alternative household configurations. Call to ask about specific programs.
