Things to Do in Destin, Florida

Destin sits on the Emerald Coast — named for the color of the water, which really is that impossibly clear green you see in the photos. Located in Florida’s Panhandle between Panama City Beach and Pensacola, Destin was a fishing village before it became a resort town, and the fishing is still world-class.

Beaches

Henderson Beach State Park — 6,000 feet of pristine beachfront with dune walkovers, picnic areas, and nature trails. Less crowded than the public beach access points near the hotels. $6 per vehicle.

Crystal Beach — The public beach access area near HarborWalk. Good for families with parking, restrooms, and proximity to restaurants.

The water — The emerald-green color comes from the white quartz sand reflecting sunlight through shallow, clear Gulf water. It really is that color. No filter needed.

HarborWalk Village

Destin’s waterfront dining and entertainment district on Destin Harbor. Charter fishing boats dock here, restaurants line the boardwalk, and live music plays nightly in season.

AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar — The anchor restaurant with a massive outdoor deck, raw bar, and live music. The back deck overlooks the harbor.

Harbor Docks — Fresh sushi and seafood on the water. Locals eat here.

Fishing charters — Deep-sea and inshore charters leave from the harbor daily. Destin calls itself the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” — red snapper, grouper, amberjack, mahi-mahi, and king mackerel.

Crab Island

A submerged sandbar in Choctawhatchee Bay where the water is waist-deep and hundreds of boats anchor on sunny days. Floating food vendors, inflatable water parks, and an atmosphere that’s part beach party, part boat parade.

You need a boat, kayak, or paddleboard to get there — no walk-in access. Pontoon boat rentals are the most popular option ($300-500/day).

Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park — Water slides, lazy river, mini golf, and go-karts. Good for a family half-day.

Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park — Dolphin shows, sea lion encounters, stingray touch pool. Small but hands-on.
