Best Day Trips from Destin, Florida

Destin sits on Florida’s Panhandle with 30A to the east and Panama City to the west within driving range. The region is beach-focused with white-sand communities, nature preserves, and water sports. Most trips are short drives along scenic coastal highways. The area is less crowded than central Florida but still attracts families and vacationers, especially in summer and spring break.

Seaside and 30A, Florida — 20 miles / 25 minutes

A master-planned beach community with distinctive New Urbanism architecture (Victorian-style pastel homes, pedestrian-friendly layout). Seaside’s town center has restaurants, shops, and galleries. The beaches are pristine white sand. Route 30A (Scenic Highway 30A) runs 18 miles and connects Seaside to other communities: Grayton Beach, Santa Rosa Beach, Rosemary Beach, and Watercolor. Each has its own character and quiet beaches. Plan 3–4 hours for walking, swimming, and eating. Less crowded than Destin proper, and charming for couples or families seeking quiet beach time.

Panama City Beach, Florida — 50 miles / 60 minutes

A larger beach town with 27 miles of sand, water parks, and busy boardwalks. The beach is excellent for swimming but crowded in summer and spring break. The Pier Park entertainment complex has rides and restaurants. The Panama City Beach Shipwrecks are popular diving sites. The town is more commercial and less upscale than Seaside or Destin. Water park attractions (Pier Park, Shipwreck Island) appeal to families. Plan 5–6 hours for driving and beach time. The drive is straight west on Highway 98.

Pensacola, Florida — 55 miles / 60 minutes

Florida’s oldest European settlement with a historic downtown, waterfront, and naval history. The Naval Aviation Museum (free admission, donations encouraged) is the primary draw — one of the largest aviation museums in the world with restored aircraft and fighter planes. The Pensacola Lighthouse and Museum offer views across the bay. Palafox Street downtown has galleries, restaurants, and shops. Fort Pickens, a pre-Civil War fort at the tip of the barrier island, is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Plan 6–8 hours for the drive and meaningful exploration. The town has character and deserves more than a quick beach stop.

Grayton Beach, Florida — 15 miles / 20 minutes

A small, quieter beach town with a bohemian vibe and local character. The beach is uncrowded and beautiful. Grayton Beach State Park has nature trails through coastal forest and beach access ($8 entry). The small village has a few restaurants and antique shops but no chain stores. Less commercial than Destin and more peaceful. The area is known for kiteboarding and fishing. Plan 2–3 hours for beach and town wandering.

Fort Walton Beach, Florida — 5 miles / 10 minutes

Immediately adjacent to Destin. The main draws are the Destin Area Zoo (aquarium, zoo, and nature park), water sports (parasailing, jet skis), and the Okaloosa Fishing Pier (1,000 feet for viewing and fishing). The beach itself is less distinguished than Destin’s. This is more of a quick outing or add-on to a Destin stay. The downtown has T-shirt shops and casual restaurants. Plan 1–2 hours for the fishing pier and a casual meal.

A quiet, family-friendly beach with a fishing pier and nature preserve. Navarre Beach Marine Park is home to sea turtles and marine life. The beach is white sand but less developed than Destin or Seaside. The Navarre Beach Pier is a scenic walk. Santa Rosa Island runs the length of the beach. Less touristy than surrounding areas. Plan 2–3 hours for beach time.

Defuniak Springs, Florida — 35 miles / 45 minutes

A small historic town inland known for Victorian architecture and a circular spring. The town is built around a spring-fed lake, unusual for inland Florida. The Walton-DeFuniak Library is a historic structure. The town has antique shops and local restaurants. Less visited than beach towns; appealing for history or a quiet countryside break. Plan 2 hours for town exploration and a meal.

Route 98 Scenic Drive

A scenic drive along the coast from Destin west to Panama City. Highway 98 (Scenic Highway 98) runs right along the Gulf, offering water views and access to small coastal towns. No specific destination is required; the drive itself is the appeal. Pull over at overlooks, stop for photos, and explore small communities. The route can be done in 1–2 hours (no stops) or 4+ hours (multiple stops and meals).
