Before you head out with your metal detector, it’s essential to understand the rules and regulations for metal detecting in the Daytona Beach area. The city of Daytona Beach prohibits metal detecting in parks and on public property, but it is allowed on the beach. However, you must obtain a permit from Volusia County before you start detecting. The permit is free and can be obtained from the beach safety department. You’ll need to provide your name, address, and contact information, and you’ll receive a permit that’s valid for one year.

It’s important to note that metal detecting is not allowed on any historical or archaeological sites without permission from the appropriate authorities. This includes shipwrecks and other historical sites, as well as state or federal lands.

Tips for Successful Metal Detecting

Metal detecting can be a fun and rewarding hobby, but it does require some patience and skill. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your metal detecting experience in the Daytona Beach area:

– Start by researching the area you plan to detect. Look for historical sites or areas where people may have lost valuable items.
– Make sure you have the right equipment, including a metal detector, digging tools, and a pouch or bag to hold your finds.
– Check the tide schedule before you head out, as low tide is the best time to search for treasures on the beach.

Finding Gold from Spanish Shipwrecks

The Daytona Beach area has a rich history of Spanish shipwrecks, and it’s possible to find gold and other treasures if you know where to look. One of the most famous shipwrecks in the area is the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank in 1622 off the coast of Key West. While the wreck is not in the Daytona Beach area, it’s believed that some of the treasure may have washed up on nearby beaches over the years.

To increase your chances of finding treasure from Spanish shipwrecks, do some research on the history of the area and any known shipwrecks. Look for areas where ships may have wrecked or where artifacts have been found in the past. Always obtain the proper permissions before detecting on any historical or archaeological sites.
