The beach you can drive on
Daytona's hard-packed sand made it the 'world's most famous beach' — pioneers raced automobiles on the shore from Ormond Beach to Ponce Inlet long before paved roads existed, and the aerial-led guide on this page runs the whole 23-mile coastal story from Sand Dune Park south. You can still drive on stretches of it today, which no other major Florida beach allows.
The two Dayons
- Daytona International Speedway — the 'World Center of Racing': a 2.5-mile tri-oval established in 1959, home of the Daytona 500, transformed by a $400 million upgrade. It leads the ten-best list here
- The Boardwalk and Pier — the 1920s Boardwalk and Amusements area, classical arcades, vintage games, and rides; the family run and the 2026 walking tour on this page both live here
The verdict question
Mark and Pam's visit on this page tests the famous claim directly — the historic racing routes, the wide drivable shoreline, decades of tourism fame — and delivers a verdict on whether the title holds up. Island Hopper's guide frames the town around its event identity instead: Bike Week in March, Biketoberfest in the fall, and NASCAR's biggest stage. Timing a Daytona day around (or away from) those crowds is the main planning decision.
From Orlando
It's the closest beach day trip of all — about an hour northeast — and the natural pairing is our own Daytona coverage for anyone staying longer. As a day trip: Speedway tour in the morning, Boardwalk in the afternoon, sand under the tires in between.
