Daytona Beach Beaches Guide — Where to Go, Park & Play

Daytona Beach Beaches Guide

23 miles of coastline with hard-packed coquina sand — firm enough to drive on, wide enough to park hundreds of cars at once, and stretching from Ormond Beach in the north to Ponce Inlet in the south. Here’s a beach-by-beach breakdown.

Main Beach / Boardwalk Area

The central beach between Main Street and Seabreeze Boulevard. This is the Daytona Beach that everyone pictures — the boardwalk, the amusement rides, the Bandshell, and the most concentrated tourist area.

Vibe: Busy, social, family-friendly. Beach vendors, lifeguards, and easy access to restaurants and attractions.

Driving: Allowed in the vehicular zone ($20 peak season, free Dec-Jan). Follow the marked ramps and speed limits (10 mph).

Best for: First-time visitors, families who want everything within walking distance.

Ormond Beach — North

Ormond Beach is quieter and more residential than central Daytona. The sand is the same hard-packed coquina, the beach is just as wide, but the crowd thins considerably.

Andy Romano Beachfront Park — Playground, splash pad, covered pavilions, and restrooms. One of the best-equipped beach parks in the area for families with young children.

Driving: Allowed in designated zones.

Best for: Families looking for a more relaxed beach experience with good facilities.

Ponce Inlet & Lighthouse Point

The southern end of the peninsula, where the Halifax River meets the Atlantic. The beach here is beautiful, less crowded, and has views of the lighthouse.

Lighthouse Point Park — Beach access, picnic areas, and the lighthouse as a backdrop. Dolphins are frequently spotted in the inlet.

No driving on this section — pedestrian beach only.

Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, couples seeking quiet.

New Smyrna Beach — 20 Minutes South

Technically a separate city, but very much part of the Daytona Beach vacation orbit. NSB has a more independent, artsy vibe with better surfing and a less touristy atmosphere.

Surfing: The inlet break at the NSB jetty is one of the best and most consistent surf spots in Florida. Multiple surf schools operate here.

Flagler Avenue — NSB’s main beach access street with restaurants, shops, and a walkable downtown atmosphere.

Driving: Allowed in designated areas.

Best for: Surfers, couples, and visitors who want the beach without the Daytona tourist infrastructure.

Beach Driving Tips

Daytona is one of the only beaches in Florida where you can still drive and park on the sand. Here’s what you need to know:

Speed limit: 10 mph on the beach. Enforced by Volusia County Beach Safety.

Fee: $20 per vehicle during peak season (February-November). Free December-January. Annual passes available.

Access ramps: Marked ramps along Atlantic Avenue. The ramps at International Speedway Boulevard and Dunlawton Avenue are the busiest; less-used ramps are at University Boulevard and Hartford Avenue.

Tide: Driving is easier at low tide when the beach is wider. At high tide, the driving lane narrows and soft sand areas expand.

Rules: Stay in the designated vehicular zone. Don’t park within 5 feet of the water line. Headlights on at all times. No driving in pedestrian-only zones (Ponce Inlet, beach parks).
