On Beach Street in downtown Daytona, chocolate has been made the slow way since the 1940s. Angell & Phelps was founded in 1925 on Mackinac Island, Michigan, by Riddell Angell and Cora Phelps, and moved to Daytona during the war years; owner Chuck Smith has made candy here since 1983. The signatures are the Honeybees — caramel-pecan patties, deliberately not called turtles — molded chocolate seashells and gators, chocolate-covered potato chips and bacon, and cordial cherries that rest five days before sale.
About the tours in these films — read this first
Several films on this page show the guided factory tour as it ran in 2010, 2018 and 2020 — full production-floor walks that made this a famous Florida factory tour. Those guided tours have been discontinued. Today's visit is the one the 2022 film shows: watch the chocolatiers through the factory viewing windows, take the free samples, and work the shop cases. The older tour films remain here as the best look inside the production process itself — the candy-making hasn't changed, only the format of watching it.
The factory's own camera
Two films come from Angell & Phelps itself: a look inside at chocolatiers at work, and a maker's-eye short of chocolate molds being made on the production line — the modern, windows-era view of the same craft the tour films celebrate.
The shop
Chocolate is sold by weight, the cases run to molded sea life and seasonal specialties, and the whole stop takes well under an hour — the natural sweet detour inside a Beach Street afternoon, which is how most of these films use it.
