Things to Do in Cozumel
Cozumel is a 30-by-10-mile island off the Riviera Maya coast, reachable by a 45-minute ferry from Playa del Carmen. The west side faces the Mesoamerican Reef and is calm, sheltered, perfect for snorkeling and diving — the east side faces the open Caribbean and is wild, surfable, dotted with empty beaches. San Miguel is the only real town, a small grid right at the ferry pier. Cruise ships dock here too, but the island is big enough that even on a five-ship day, twenty minutes from town you’re alone.
Quick Facts: Cozumel is in Mexico. Best time to visit: November–May for the calmest dive water. Hurricane season is June-November; the island is well off the typical tracks but not immune.

Top 10 Things to Do in Cozumel
Palancar Reef Snorkel/Dive
The signature Cozumel reef — drift dives along a wall covered in soft corals, sponges, and reef fish. Snorkeling boats run shallower coral gardens.
Punta Sur Eco Park
On the south tip — a lighthouse, mangrove crocodile lagoon, beach, snorkeling, and a small Mayan navigation temple. Half-day, rentable golf carts.
Chankanaab National Park
On the calm west side just south of San Miguel. Snorkel-from-shore reef, sea turtle pen, dolphin program, botanical gardens.
Cozumel East Coast Drive
Rent a Jeep or scooter and drive the cross-island highway to the Caribbean side. Wild beaches, the rock formation at El Mirador, and a few palapa beach bars.
San Gervasio Mayan Ruins
Center of the island — the most important shrine to Ix Chel (goddess of fertility) on the Yucatán. Modest scale but well-preserved jungle setting.
Money Bar / Dzul Ha
Free shore-snorkel reef just south of town. Walk in from the beach club’s ladder — surgeonfish, parrotfish, occasional eagle ray.
Submarine Tour
Atlantis sub dives to ~100 feet on the reef edge. Sealed cabin, big windows. Family-friendly alternative for non-snorkelers.
Playa Palancar Beach Club
Quiet south-end beach club, rented chairs and snorkel gear, restaurant. Less crowded than the cruise-ship beach clubs north of San Miguel.
Cozumel Pearl Farm
Boat tour to the north end — only commercial pearl farm in the Caribbean. Snorkel on the way back over Isla de la Pasión.
Cozumel Tequila Trail
Distillery tours and tastings on the central highway — small operations producing local tequila and mezcal you won’t find off-island.
When to Go
