Things to Do in Cancún

Cancún sits at the northern tip of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, where the Caribbean turns turquoise and the white sand is so fine it stays cool in the sun. The Hotel Zone is a 14-mile barrier island of resorts; downtown Cancún (El Centro) is a real Mexican city of about 900,000 people. Most of the Yucatán’s biggest draws — the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá, the cenotes of the Riviera Maya, the reefs of Cozumel — are within an easy day trip.

Quick Facts: Cancún is in Mexico. Best time to visit: December–April for dry season and reliable beach weather. May-October is hotter, occasional rain, hurricane risk peaks September.

Top 10 Things to Do in Cancún

Playa Delfines & the Hotel Zone Beaches

Public beach with the famous Cancún sign and panoramic views of the Caribbean. Free, open all day, and the water is shallow enough to wade well offshore.

Chichén Itzá Day Trip

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramid of Kukulkán, the Great Ball Court, and the Sacred Cenote. Roughly 2.5 hours west by car or bus.

Isla Mujeres Ferry Day

A 20-minute ferry from Puerto Juárez gets you to a 4-mile island with Playa Norte (consistently rated among the world’s best beaches), turtle farms, and a south-end lighthouse with sweeping views.

Xcaret Eco-Park

Massive natural park in the Riviera Maya with underground rivers, snorkeling, traditional Mexican shows in the evening, and dozens of activity zones — easy full day.

Cenote Ik Kil

Sacred Mayan well near Chichén Itzá. Vines drape down to a turquoise pool 85 feet below ground level. Swim, jump, or just float and look up.

MUSA Underwater Museum

Over 500 sculptures placed on the seafloor between Cancún and Isla Mujeres. Snorkeling and diving tours visit them; the works double as artificial reef structure.

El Rey Ruins

Compact archaeological site inside the Hotel Zone itself. 47 structures, plenty of resident iguanas, and far smaller crowds than Chichén Itzá.

Mercado 28

Downtown’s big artisan market — silver, hammocks, leather, and food stalls cooking real Yucatecan dishes (cochinita pibil, sopa de lima).

Sailing & Catamaran Trips

Half-day catamaran sails along the Hotel Zone with snorkel stops at Punta Nizuc reef. Operators run from the Cancún marina at multiple price points.

Coba Ruins & Bike

Older Mayan site about 2 hours away. The Nohoch Mul pyramid was one of the few you could still climb until 2020 — rules change, but the bike-rental network through the jungle paths is still a great way to see it.
